Found the bait, fish jumping out of the water, but nothing to show for it. I saw some folks wading, but they were not doing anything either. I was fishing from the shore, using bait shrimp. I did have a couple hits, nibbles, maybe a short run, but no serious takers. Bunch of bait stealing %$#ts. I'm not used to this kind of fishing, but hopefully I'll get back out tomorrow and catch something. If not, then I'll just fatten them for the rest of ya. The view was fantastic! Just nice sitting there watching the shrimp boats come in beats sitting in the office any day.

Well i would just keep trying,as your are bound to catch something eventualy. The fish that are stealing your bait are small whiting and most defintaly the hated hardhead.
Hardheads are basicaly garbage small catfish that can sting you so dont feel to bad if you dont hook one!(maybe even lucky since you dont have to de-hook him)
-At any rate, fishing the Seabrook flats at least gives you about the best chance around here for catching something worth while.
-Just keep trying and good luck!
P.S.-post on here about what you catch tomorrow!

I was dragging the pier at pine gully Sunday for flounder. Used large mud minnows but didn't get one bump. Is it to late in the season for flounder at this location. Bert

Keep the perspective......flounder do not know of the seasons so much as we might like to think they do. (I used to be a flounder in a former life; therefore, I know, LOL) [Maybe the exception to this is migration for spawning!]
All kidding aside...don't give up on the flatfish...they're there, year 'round...ya just gotta find 'em! Go slow...be gentle, they will come to you.
Good Luck...keep on keepin' on!

Just got in, and its not with any pictures.... We got out of class later than we figured, so that cut down on the fishing time. Tried the Pine Gully pier. Thanks El Lago, that is a beautiful place to fish. I had a couple bumps, but just could not complete the deal. My "guide" was able to get a couple sand trout in, even asked me if I wanted to lip one for a picture....funny guy, THEY HAVE TEETH!!!! No wonder I never went fishing in the salt water, too many teeth involved. We got run off the pier and went up to the waterway between Seabrook and Kemah. Guide had a couple bumps, and I did hook up with something, (guide thought it was a flounder) that put a nice bow in my rod, and felt good for a couple minutes, then broke off. Needless to say, I am still fishless, but appear to have the theory down. A couple more days left before I'm outa here.....

Well thats still good to hear, at least you had a few bumps and one fish on for a few minutes!
-Just keep trying,as it seems that everyday you get a few steps closer to catching one.
-Just keep letting us know how it goes!
Good Luck!

Thanks for the encouragement, I should be used to not catching fish, seems to be the story lately. Oh well, I'll be back out there solo tomorrow, guide has family obligations. 2112, dragging? Do you mean you walked up and down that pier dragging a bait? hmmmmm We did see a couple gentleman catching some of the whiting mentioned here. They actually kept them, making the comment, since I caught it......I thought they were trash fish. Oh well, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Any suggestions???

TreeBass. The words may be wrong but you understood it anyway. Dragging a pier for flounder is a technique. You basically take a step and sweep the rod forward a few inches and pause and sweep again in the same direction paying particulary close attention as the bait nears the supports/pillings that hold the pier up. Take another step and repeat. Line should be heavy. I use 20lb test with the drag locked down and a stiff rod becuase you don't want to loose a large flounder or a keeper red becuase it pulled drag and broke the line on the barnicale encrusted pilelings. This is also a risky way to fish because if the big one hits and you don't have a good grip it will rip the rod out of your hand. I have lost 2 rigs in the past 10 years with the most recent loss this september in SanLeon of a cherished 10 year old all star rod matched to a 5 year old cardiff reel. Good luck Bert

This may seem like a dumb question but I live in South Shore (moved here recently) and I don't know where these Seabrook Flats and Kemah Flats are... could someone gimme some easy directions? I've been trying to find an easy place to get to and do some fishing around the house.

Ok, not sure what is up, but here we go... Fished the Seabrook flats are by the bridge, where did all the water go? Yes, I braved the weather, (only one out there) and had a bunch of bait stealers. The lady looked at me weird when I asked for some bait shrimp, I think maybe she thought I was eating it .... I'm hesitant to go to a smaller hook and bait, but my time is getting short. Maybe a another once of weight? Does that make a difference? I'm using a 3/4 once weight, and keep feeling the thing go in, go out, it's driving me crazy. Well I may try it in the morning, (don't have to be in class till 9ish)we'll see what happpens. Just looking for one fish

Oh, and WesG, try introducing yourself and asking these folks on the forum. I'm just visiting the area and do not have a clue other than google. These guys know their stuff!

The Kemah Bridge is the marker..."south" to Bacliff are the Kemah flats (flats being defined as the relatively shallow waters from the shoreline out ~ 1/2 mile)...The Seabrook flats extend "north" of the Kemah Bridge to El Jardin ( about 1/4 mile "north " of the Pine Gully Pier).
The water levels (tides) are relative. High tide this time of year (check the Solunar tables) may be quite shallow in contrast to "spring-tides" for example. A consistent north wind coupled with a low tide will make for "sandy-flats". I think the flounder know that. LOL!
Stick to it! Keep on "Keepin' On"! Once you get into the flounder you'll never forget it...it's an insidious disease!
Good Luck!

Ok, I got out there this morning bright and early. Saw a beautiful sunrise. Figured out that the north wind blew all the water out of the bay. Heard that from a local. Interesting... But was told by others it's just the tide. I actually caught a crab, or do they catch you? I got him up to the shore, then he saw me, and was gone. So I did not get a picture. I'll be out there this evening, hopefully to catch something. Thanks Leonardo, does that mean I have a better chance to catch one?? I may have to come back when I have more time.

The passion for fishing may be at it's very best, difficult to quantify......at least for the unexposed. While technique differs from salt to fresh I think the concept remains the same. That being said, I encourage you to persevere and stop whining (LOL!) "A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work ". (sorry 'bout the smack...wish you could be here under better weather conditions!) You seem to have all the prerequisite. Continue!
