We had a great day fishing Fayette last Saturday even though the wind blew hard (off and on) most of the day. I wanted to ask how the rain kills bass? I have heard other very experienced fisherman make similar statements, so there must be something I'm missing... I would have thought the rain would be good for the lake, even though Fayette gets very little runoff.
Can someone please explain, thanks.

Heavy rain = washes all pesticides and chemicals into lakes

This article is discussing Florida, but the principles are the same. Basically, heavy rains and the nutrients washed into the lake cause an algae bloom. This huge influx of algae chokes off dissolved oxygen at night (by producing a sudden surge in CO2) or during long periods of cloudiness, which can cause the same phenomenon. Huge rains can also cause a mixing effect simulating turnover which also depletes dissolved oxygen levels.

Just got back from lake and saw about 10 dead buzzards laying next to an old Toyota Landcrusier with Liberian consulate license plates.

Out of curiousity- can lightning striking the water cause a massive kill? We used to see kills like this in the Gulf occasionally.

100 dead bass averaging 4 pounds.
10 dead bass.
Sounds like post tournament mortality from a local bass club..?
All dead fish were on the south end of the lake. North end would have been more convincing. Wind's been out of the S for how long, now?
The fish are so shallow they're stressed from the 91 deg water temp and fishing pressure.
'They' must've sprayed the "grass" again. I saw coves. Lots of recently dead, brown 'grass'.
Not a fish in sight and no sign of life. It's a conspiracy I tell ya!
LOL..Fouz if that was directed at me you can suck it!  I only offered what I saw. Was it 100 fish? Nope....I'd say it was 20 fish total in assorted species. And yes there is still green grass out deeper, however several patches of the shallow grass I had found earlier were dead. Did they spray it? I have no idea. Was it due to the rain? I have no idea. I'm pretty sure I stated that. As far as I know someone went and took a big 'ol toxic dump that upset the ph and killed off only fish 10lbs and above....  It wasn't directed at anyone in particular, Chris. Just an observation of a topic that meanders with lots of different views/opinions on what happened, how many, etc. Like so many other threads. I'd say that the profound rainfall you mention could be the culprit. And that is the same thing that caused the fish kill last year. One thing I will say is I seriously doubt it has anything to do with water temps. Power plant lakes resident fish populations are used to it. I've caught lots of fish out of Monticello and Fayatte in the dead of summer with water temps over 100 degrees. I personally didn't say fished died from water temps, however catching and releasing fish when the temps are that high WILL stress them. I guided at Fayette for almost 10 years. To me, there are plenty of bass lakes to fish in the summer without fishing in 100 degree water. This DOES increase the chances of a fish dying when it's stressed.

If you catch a 5+lb fish on fayette right now, you really have to just bring it in the boat quickly and get him back in the water as fast as possible. The water is so hot that those big ones are pretty worn out once you get them to the boat.
To the point of the grass - it's very confusing to me too. There was quite a bit of grass out there over the last few months and it's now turning into some brown nasty [censored] but there's still green stuff mixed in. Like someone else said the better grass is deeper. I did read that back in the day when the power plant added a 3rd generator is when all the 'good' grass died off due to the extreme water temps.
