My job is to help people catch fish and have a good time doing so, but these actions will not get you high on my buddy list:
1. You bring your GPS and mark our spots without me knowing during a crappie fishing trip 2. You see us on a pile, drive by with a side scan, mark the spot and drive off 3. You see my marker buoy and pull directly beside me 4. You see us catching crappie in obscure, off the wall places and tell everyone the exact location 5. You live on the lake and are retired, find us, approach us, mark our spot then drive off.
When it comes to other species besides crappie, I am very lax and really don't care if someone potlicks as long as it doesn't interfere with our success or are safety. This can be seen on Saturdays, or as I like to call it, "Free Guide Trip Day." Given that a large sector of the country doesn't believe in working for a living, I'm surprised there's not a whole lot more potlicking going on.
I've been known to help out quite a few boats during the spawn, especially if they have kids on board. If someone is upfront when they board the boats and tells me they would like to learn a few new spots, I will let them mark a few spots. I won't necessarily give them our "Aces" but I'll make sure to give them on some productive spots.
I think if our company wouldn't spend most every day of our lives trying to ensuring our customers had success, I wouldn't be as protective of our investments. It's a tough balance because I want everyone to be successful out here on Cedar Creek, but I also run guaranteed trips and I like to pay the bills on time.

Reckon I'm a potlicker too. I have put out bp's, even sunk a few loaded boats in my time, but if I find a BP on my graph, I really don't care who put it out, as it now is part mine - public waters and all. Once it leaves the deck of your boat, it doesn't belong to you anymore, period. Now will I follow you or pull up to your bouy without an invitation, HECK NO. If I see you slay fish there, will I look the next time I'm out, YES SIR. Sorry, it's the nature of the game.

As a kid I was a potlicker. Every time Mom made a cake I licked the electric mixer beaters, spoon and the mixing bowl. I still practice that today as you can tell by my rotund shape. Thanks for the perspective Bobcat, guess that makes me a pot licker as well...Since EVERY time my daughter (Rachel) cooks oatmeal raisin or oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I am a pot licker and a spoon licker as well. Now, where is Rachel? I am SUDDENLY thinking she needs to make up a batch of cookies!! Those are my favorite cookies!!!!

Last weekend I was fishing a spot that i fish frequently. It's within easy sight of the boat ramp. I was pulling in crappie at a pretty good pace. I had caught about 15 in less than an hour. So a guy launching his boat sees this and motors straight over to the where i'm fishing and says "I saw you where having pretty good luck so I thought I'd come over and get in on it." THAT is a potlicker. If he'd made note of where I was at and waited until I left then I don't necessarily think that's pot licking. I don't own that brush pile. Heck for all I know he's found that brush pile on his own and was just waiting to get on it. But seeing me catch fish and pulling up right beside me....well....that's potlicking.
If I see a boat anchored and fishing a spot I'll make a mental note "Hey, next time I need to cruise by there with the sonar and see what's there" I would never motor over to them to mark the spot. I'd never even get close to them. I wouldn't even watch to see if they catch fish. Just take note that there might be something there worth checking out. That's one way to find new spots. I don't think that's potlicking. I'll also burn up some gas just idling around with the sonar looking for new stuff so I don't rely solely on seeing other boats to find new spots.
Now if I see someone out on the lake dropping brush piles am I going to fish them. You better believe I am. Much as I expect someone who sees me drop structure to come back and fish it. But again i'm not going to run right over to them and mark the spot. I'll wait until a later time and find them with the sonar. Is that potlicking? I wasn't following them. I wasn't trying to be sneaky. Should that structure be forever off limits to me since I happened to see them place it and didn't actually discover it on my own? I don't think so.
By some of the definitions above every fisherman is a potlicker. Well said SoonerDG

Many years ago about 20 years ago we were hunting in New Mexico the guy came in and said that right at dusk and said he is seen a huge mule deer but he didn't want to shoot it because he didn't want to pack it out at night. That night he got really drunk and he didn't wake up early so I went out looking for that mule deer I found it and I shot it. He got kinda mad at me because he said I potlicked it I said you shouldn't have said anything about with that mulie and how do you even know it was thesame mule deer either way he ended up shooting mule deer but not as pretty as the one I shot.

The only part of this whole potlicking topic that bothers me is when someone drives right next to me very slowly to mark a spot and then pretends they're just cruising by. As if I'm not smart enough to know what they're doing or not smart enough to watch them punching the button when they go by.
I'd be glad to give them all the info on the brushpile if they'd just man up and ask. Hell, I'd probably tell them about every brushpile I know in the area if they'd just ask.

I believe the below is what they may be referencing.....
"A potlicker in fishing is a man who is too lazy to go find fish on his own, so he looks for someone who is already on fish and then he moves into that man's spot. He potlicks, he depends on what others find or leave him." I think everyone agrees if you find it, fish it. It is a public lake. It's those who drive around looking for those who have found fish, that are Potlickers. If I couldn't go out on any body of water and put a pattern together on my own, I wouldn't fish. Like I said before, it is unfortunate that new American ways is "Why work when, I can get it for free"
