I have no idea what the true definition of "POTLICKER" is ?
is it someone who uses high end electronics to map the lake and fish concentrations ?
is it someone who gets a tip from a fellow angler ?
is it someone who stumbles on a good spot with low end electronics ?
is it someone who sees another boat sitting still and checks the area out ?
is it someone who gets invited to a good spot ?
is it someone who notices a gaggle of boats sitting together ?
is it someone who see others pulling in fish ?
is it someone who sees another boat dropping "things" in the water ?
help a fella out here .....seems to be rather vague to me
certainly those tossing the term out have been fishing other folks "spots" on numerous occasions
seems to me its just another inflammatory comment meant to be little another person
so please feel free to offer your "ADVICE" on this topic
I truly would love to hear the "TRUE" definition of "POTLICKER" ....
it seems to get tossed out here on this forum regularly noidea

I believe the below is what they may be referencing.....

"A potlicker in fishing is a man who is too lazy to go find fish on his own, so he looks for someone who is already on fish and then he moves into that man's spot. He potlicks, he depends on what others find or leave him."

Yep, kinda like the "friend" who drives slowly by ya whilst you are catchin fish, tryin to engage small talk by sayin, Hi you seem to be doing well, whilst hittin the waypoint marker button at the same time. That beez a potlicker.

I might be a pot licker. I find brushpiles and structure others have put out and I fish them. The only way I am not a pot licker is I sometimes build piles on my own or used to when I was in better shape. Net Girl and I have built quite a few over the years and replenished some that had deteriorated. So I guess I am a pot maker and pot licker.... sort of a hybrid.

so if I don't run a gps and cant "WAYPOINT" ...then I aint a potlicker
and if I build "enhancements" I aint a potlicker
but if I see you ketch some fish and come back later to scope the area and ketch fish....
then I might be a potlicker ?
and no binoculars please .... rolfmao
in reality those that toss the term frequently fall into the rather vague guidelines it seems to me
I know for a fact those that use the term also use binoculars to watch others ketch fish
seen it from the big "PRO" types.... all the way down the scale
like maybe a zillion times ....
heck I think I been "potlicked" by the best one time er another if that's the case
I can tell ya matter of factly what big dave has to say has been done to me hundreds of times
or do they in fact have to be lazy to fall as well in this category ....? noidea

Hmmm, good question...I don't know the answer...but historically the term "potlicking" is a derogatory reference used to denote a person(s) that purposely takes a deceitful course of action in order to take advantage of someone else's hard work. For example, if you saw a neighbor driving by your house with stake beds in the boat and you jumped in your truck and followed him to the lake, noted his drop locations, then fished them when you knew he wasn't on the lake, that is typically referred to "Potlicking." We had such a neighbor when I was a kid, and every fisherman knew it and avoided passing him or his house when dropping brush (or going fishing). Merely taking advantage of someone's hard work via dumb luck, accident, or good electronics does not in and of itself qualify as "potlicking", although this area will be a point of much debate, because of different perspectives.

potlicker [pot-lik-er]

noun

See also: piscatorum ignavum

1. Midland and Southern U.S. A person too lazy to go find fish on their own. Shows up whenever someone gives them a favorable fishing report. Waits until the boat has launched and truck is parked to hitch a ride without doing any of the work. Needs to be told what bait, what depth, what color, what size and what body of water in order to find fish.

2. Dialect . A worthless angler waiting for someone else to show them where and how to fish.

I'm a potlicker too!

Side note, potlicker is a first cousin to sandbagger.

Yep, Potlicking is the American way.

Set at home and let others do the work for you, then hold out your hand and get a free check!

I am not a Potlicker.

These two quotes come to mind:

Its true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance? Ronald Reagan

If you have a difficult task give it to a lazy man, he will find an easier way to do it. Hlades Law
