potlicker [pot-lik-er]
noun
See also: piscatorum ignavum
1. Midland and Southern U.S. A person too lazy to go find fish on their own. Shows up whenever someone gives them a favorable fishing report. Waits until the boat has launched and truck is parked to hitch a ride without doing any of the work. Needs to be told what bait, what depth, what color, what size and what body of water in order to find fish.
2. Dialect . A worthless angler waiting for someone else to show them where and how to fish.
I'm a potlicker too! Hmmm, lets see if I can dissect this a bit. 1) Ketchn's favorite fishing technique!!! 2) Ketchn's favorite Ploy (i.e..under house arrest, but maybe I can get out...fish are biting you say...I'll have to check with spouse!) Piscatur Hahahahahaha...thats funny right there.

As a kid I was a potlicker. Every time Mom made a cake I licked the electric mixer beaters, spoon and the mixing bowl. I still practice that today as you can tell by my rotund shape.

Thanks for the perspective Bobcat, guess that makes me a pot licker as well...Since EVERY time my daughter (Rachel) cooks oatmeal raisin or oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I am a pot licker and a spoon licker as well. Now, where is Rachel? I am SUDDENLY thinking she needs to make up a batch of cookies!!

I believe the below is what they may be referencing.....
"A potlicker in fishing is a man who is too lazy to go find fish on his own, so he looks for someone who is already on fish and then he moves into that man's spot. He potlicks, he depends on what others find or leave him." This!

I aksed the question because it seems to me sooner or later EVERYONE falls into the definition unless its very matter of fact on what defines this behavior .... if you waypoint me I could care if you follow me I am flattered if you watch me I hope you are entertained if you fish a spot I enhance I hope you ketch a whale and in the end ....as a wise man once told me .... its just a fish ! on almost any water body I can and do find numerous brushpiles very quickly with my el cheapo 2 d graph I understand not everyone has the capacity to use such cheap equipment and find fish and that's why I am not totally sure still what defines the actual "POTLICKER" I suppose you have to be lazy it seems to me ... and then I wonder ...they went to the lake they are trying to ketch sum fish they don't get to go often and want to ketch fish what makes them that much different than me ? the fact they don't get to go very often maybe ? is that then the definition of a lazy person ? or could it possibly be just a case of less experience ? and needing the help of the more experienced to ketch sum fish if you see me on the water ...stop by and say hi .... if we are on them ...tie up and or follow me an ketch sum for you it surely wont bother me or my buds I promise matter of fact we will most likely be very happy we could help ya KABOOM

You mean that when someone gives away jigs and tells the fisherperson in distress (not able to catch any) to go right over there... and find the fish? Is that the type of help you're talking about?
I've seen it happen. I've contributed. We've even gone as far as giving the fish away to those about ready to leave and disappointed that they didn't catch any.
Seems you (we) are contributing to the problem Ketchn. We are worse than potlickers, we are potlicker enablers!!
Ya'll take it easy out there. There's more than enough fish and water to go around. At least for now.... maybe it'll rain again.
peace...

Last weekend I was fishing a spot that i fish frequently. It's within easy sight of the boat ramp. I was pulling in crappie at a pretty good pace. I had caught about 15 in less than an hour. So a guy launching his boat sees this and motors straight over to the where i'm fishing and says "I saw you where having pretty good luck so I thought I'd come over and get in on it." THAT is a potlicker. If he'd made note of where I was at and waited until I left then I don't necessarily think that's pot licking. I don't own that brush pile. Heck for all I know he's found that brush pile on his own and was just waiting to get on it. But seeing me catch fish and pulling up right beside me....well....that's potlicking.
If I see a boat anchored and fishing a spot I'll make a mental note "Hey, next time I need to cruise by there with the sonar and see what's there" I would never motor over to them to mark the spot. I'd never even get close to them. I wouldn't even watch to see if they catch fish. Just take note that there might be something there worth checking out. That's one way to find new spots. I don't think that's potlicking. I'll also burn up some gas just idling around with the sonar looking for new stuff so I don't rely solely on seeing other boats to find new spots.
Now if I see someone out on the lake dropping brush piles am I going to fish them. You better believe I am. Much as I expect someone who sees me drop structure to come back and fish it. But again i'm not going to run right over to them and mark the spot. I'll wait until a later time and find them with the sonar. Is that potlicking? I wasn't following them. I wasn't trying to be sneaky. Should that structure be forever off limits to me since I happened to see them place it and didn't actually discover it on my own? I don't think so.
By some of the definitions above every fisherman is a potlicker.

By some of the definitions above every fisherman is a potlicker. Agreed. It's the ones that want it for free without any effort, they always have their hand out for anything free. They are not fishermen. Grin!

I wonder how much trouble Chuck has with Potlickers on CC, and destroying the "public" brush piles with anchors?

I just called the potlickers hotline. $2 for the first minute and $1.25 per minute after that. 1-900-POT-LICK
Ketchn's gonna make a fortune giving fishing tips and charging by the minute. Don't bother trying to get a word in edgewise. Just dial the number and hang on!!!
***disclaimer*** That telephone number was a joke (in case some were wondering). Don't call it, I don't know what you'll get on the other end of the line.
