NP...I didn't say I agree with him. My reel tuning guru (D.R.) uses Hot Sauce in everything and I trust his judgement 100%.

Not recommended and voiding a warranty are two entirely different things. If a manufacturer states that a your warranty is void if you don't use their product, they have to supply you with their product (or so I've read). Instead this guy (who works them and is toeing the company line) simply says it's not recommended. In his own words on the last page of the post.. It seems that everyone is waiting on a repsonse from me so here it is:
We do not recommend or endorse this lubricant for use in our reels. I am not saying that it is a bad product in any way. I am just saying that it is not intended for our reels. I am not trying to cause any sales damaging problems for them or for us. This is designed for company X's reels and not ours. We only recommend our lubricants in our reels. He also stated that the problems he found were primarily in spinning reels, with their tight tolerances. And a response from someone who did more research than I... In 2001, not satisfied with standard lubrication, Quantum engineers set out to develop a premium, high performance, lubrication for their high-end reels. Working with several lubrication scientists, at one of the worlds best custom lubrication companies, they spent countless hours formulating and testing the best technology had to offer. What they came up with was a special, proprietary blend of synthetic and organic additives to provide the ultimate balance in performance, protection, durability, and smoothness in both grease and oil used for fishing equipment.
Although the formulation is proprietary, some aspects of it can be reveled to inform the general public. Hot Sauce grease does not have any kind of abrasives or lapping compound contained in it. The grease does, however, have a fine Teflon powder suspended in it to improve durability by reducing friction and wear. Teflon is a common additive used in lubrication. There is no such thing as Teflon based grease, as some people claim. All solid matter has a certain degree of surface roughness regardless of how smooth or how polished it is. The Teflon in Hot Sauce is formulated in such a way as to fill-in any roughness. The super slick nature of Teflon used in this manner provides unparalleled smoothness and durability. It is possible to see these Teflon particles with a good eye or microscope.
Other unique aspects of this proprietary formulation are: great adhesion to parts caused by the physical and bonding properties of the formulation; additives for superior corrosion protection in saltwater; and, long life and durability by protecting the base oil from aging.
Due to all the additives and complexity of the formulation process, Hot Sauce is not the cheapest lubrication one can find. In fact, Quantum engineers had a difficult time implementing this in production because of its high cost.
Quantum Hot Sauce can be used in any product, spinning, baitcast, trolling, or spincast with great success. Thousands of people have reaped the benefits of Hot Sauce outside of fishing products as well, like in the home and shop. The formulation makes it good for many applications where there are moving parts, wear, noise, and/or corrosion issues. The versatility of Hot Sauce makes it well suited for all freshwater and saltwater applications regardless of style or brand of reel. I'm like several guys in that thread...I've never been able to find Shimano lubricants. ConnieK who runs Lake Fork Tackle repair chimed in also and said she uses ReelX. I'm sure Shimano would not endorse that product either since it's not made by them. Luckily I've switched to Revo's and each reel has enough oil shipped with it to last me a year or two.

I went through a Yellow Rocket Fuel phase but I got tired of always having to add a drop here and a drop there. So I started using ABU Silicote oil. Works well and I haven't had hardly any problems since. I did try Hot Sauce when it came out but I always seemed to make a mess so I quit using it. Different strokes for different folks

Funny that Shimano recommends their oil but the last couple of casting reels I've bought didn't have any in the box....
Anyone have any feedback on using other oils such as BreakFree CLP? I've used it on my guns for years including when I was shooting competitively and have always had pretty good luck with it. I know it's not Shimano approved but nothing else is anyway....

BTW, As always, my posts seem to read harsher than I'm intending...don't take what I wrote as argumentative...it's just another opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

You have to know to apply the hot sauce. I clean my reels every 3 months or so.

Only fished with one once...BCR 803 and an STX. Very, very, very sweet indeed!

I've been using Hot Sauce "Oil" and ABU Garcia grease on my Shimano reels for 4 years. They work perfectly.

To each his own. I prefer TG Rocket fuel for bearings.

Interesting read. I get the Shimano oil with the reels all the time but never the grease. I don't even know where to get the grease except for the drag grease.
I use the Quantum Hot sauce and do a full breakdown every year. I'm more inclined to stop buying Shimano spinning gear over this issue than to stop using Hot Sauce. Perhaps that is why he threw in a disclaimer comment.
I have a Sustain that I use it on without problems and use it on all my other Shimano reels too. I would think Shimano would rework their gears to be a bit more forgiving and allow for individual tastes in lubrication...or supply a lifetime supply of grease and oil with every reel. The reels are expensive enough at purchase and they should not add to the cost for maintenance. I love my Shimano reels but they ain't so great that hassles over what lube to use makes others a better buy and actually knocks them down to a second or third on my future list. Basically I smell BS in his protests and reasoning for not using Quantum Hot Sauce and did the company a disservice with the warning.
IMO of course.

Oh, you were not alone...the BS flag was raised by many. Bantam has toned the policy down some in the latest Hot Sauce TTF thread.
