Fellow Fishermen(women),

Good morning. I am finishing up an Army career and looking to get heavily into fishing so I can teach my son who is now 3 months old. I have a few questions. Thanks kindly for those who are willing to share.

1) Are there any websites that tell how the fish are biting at certain lakes/areas?

2) Are there any apps for smartphones for fishing in texas?

3) Where should I start in bassfishing with respect to learning? DVDs/books/tips etc?

4) I am in the San Antonio area - is there a particular lake that has decent bass fishing?

As for question #1 ask here is a good starting place a lot of good people on this forum and will help you get started!

#2 get the navionics app it is a mapping app that is really good.


If you type some key words in the "search" tool at the top of the screen you can find some answers towards the reading material, I did the samething!

What do you have in tackle? Rod/reels, hooks, lures and such

First of all, thank you for serving your country. In the San Antonio area, Calaveras and Braunig are two power plant lakes SE of the city that hold bass, but are difficult to fish successfully without a boat. Up in New Braunfels, the Comal River in Landa Park holds some nice bass, but they can be difficult to catch in the crystal-clear water. That river also holds bluegill, rock bass, and Rio Grande Perch (a tilapia) that are pretty easy to catch - great for kids. I have a few rods , two zebco 33 combos (plan to get better rods), assorted jigs, spinerbaits etc.

Start at a pond. Research which lures are good for which conditions. Ill name a few
Dirty water- bright colors
Clear water with high visibility - natural colors and some people like to use silent crank baits in clear water
Near rocks- crank bait from a boat (my fav, and so easy, or jig
Covering lots of water- spinnerbaits. My favorite lure of all time. The ponds I go to have some wood scattered around, some algae near the bank and rocks. I just whip out the spinner and keep making casts to cover lots of water. Great lure.
Texas rigging a worm is also one of my favorites near wood/logs because it's less likely to get hung up

Anyways start with a pond get some experience and if you have a boat you should be good. I don't have a boat but luckily there's lots of ponds where I live. I started fishing like 4-5 years ago and love it. I have a good understanding what to use now. Just takes experience

#3) There are a number of good websites like Bass Resource. Also U-tube is very helpful for about any type of fishing you are looking to do. You can also find books at the half priced bookstores. I google and read everything I can.

I forgot to tell you to look up YouTube videos. I like LakeForkGuy, russe048, The Consummate, phytobedo, uncut angling, and ajlures. Those are the best channels that I've found so far

I was about to buy a H20 rod at academy once, but I read reviews saying they break easily. Have you had any break? I have a duckette but it's like 3x as expensive. The Abu veritas rod is great too
