I took my Z7 w/150 Merc. to Tracker Boats in Austin because it wouldn't start. Problem #1 was gas fumes coming from rod locker. They said they called the factory and there is something (don't remember name of part) on the fuel tank that is supposed to vent into the hull. They suggested leaving rod locker door open when boat is not in use. Now I'm going to have gas fumes in my garage. Problem #2 according to them is one of my trolling batteries exploded from being FROZEN??? In Texas??? Has anyone heard of this happening?

No, but most commonly because these are the ones that get lots of use and then sit for long periods of time. Were your batteries fully charged and connected to a trickle charger? If the batteries were older and not fully charged, or low on fluid then yes, they can freeze and rupture. If you don't have an onboard charger that automatically switches to a trickle charge when needed, then you'll want to make sure all cells on all batteries are full, then fully charge them and disconnect one lead from each battery terminal while in storage.

Thats the first time I have ever heard that. Living in PA, I have a 78 Ford and a 4 wheeler that routinely sit in sub freezing weather, sometimes not above 10 degrees for days.

Dead batteries can freeze up. Charged batteries? No. Exploded batteries happen from overcharging coupled with a spark from removing charging cables... Ask me how I know! ;-)

Exactly right 361v. It's a good idea to make sure golf cart, riding mower and any other battery not used in the winter is charged.

the freezing temperature for hydrochloric acid similar to the strength in batteries is -20 f. i don't recall it getting that cold anywhere locally, ever. if the acid had been watered down/replaced with pure water enough, then i am sure it is possible/likely.

No matter how many times you add water a fully charged battery will not freeze in Texas. Acid is reformed in the process even when adding water. The critical thing is: store them fully charged which is critical to long battery life anyway!

Keep them full of water and fully charged. They freeze in Alaska fully charged (-50 ambient)...US Army Cold Region Test Center, Ft Greely Alaska....nose hair and eye brows freeze quicker (-25)......

I have had a battery crack in the winter before when my boat was stored outside...batteries were not fully charged.
