Found this article while doing some research. According to Dr. John Caprio of LSU and Dr. Bill Carr of Florida. Scents like garlic don't necessarily attract bass, rather action and low frequency sounds might do a better job. Attractants with oils that spread also don't dissolve into water in a way that can be detected by fish.

Is any of this consistent with personal experience?

At first it was about the fish, now it's about so much more...

I would say that is probably pretty true. It may not attract them but the taste it has may make them hang on a little longer

It certainly dosent hurt anything and for some reason If I'm not getting bit a little spike it or scent does something. Maybe covers human oils? I dunno, they're the ones doing test in a lab while we are all out doing it on the water.

WHAT?! Next thing you'll be telling me is that they can't see heat signatures and don't need prolonged eye contact with a bait before hitting it.

I know one thing. If your crank bait doesn't light up and make cricket sounds, well my friends you won't catch any fish. Sorry I had to break the news.

If it makes you more confident you will catch more fish

I would say that is right, the scents we add are not attractants...they are like adding cheese on that burger or chilli on that dog...by adding garlic or some "juice" to the bait you make it more appealing to the fish to hang on a little longer, making it more attractive - hence the use of the word attractant...but I believe the lure itself does all the attracting...just my two scents...lol

A lot of the scents help to MASK Human scent that can turn off the fish bite. Have you ever seen one person in a boat, both fishing the exact same baits, catch more fish? Old timers fishing with "bait" saw this happen often since the fish had a longer opportunity to "sniff" the bait and some people emit distasteful Human Pheromones and even sweat. So it doesn't hurt to boost our odds to mask our scents. And I need ALL the Help I can get!!!

I agree with everything but why the does the human scent keep popping up? I'm no doctor and I don't even play one on tv, but I have a salt water aquarium and I have a clown fish that will attack my hand if I put it in the water. It is 3 inches long. Are bass really afraid of human scent? Bass will attack anything so why would our scent scare them? Sorry, but I can't believe that our salty sweat would deter a bass. Bass are not mammals that fear attack from other mammals like a deer.

I agree. As much as people try to compare them, bass aren't deer. If we could fit in a bass' mouth they would try to eat us.

Maybe it makes them hold it, maybe it doesn't. I know they will swallow a senko every time if you let them and they aren't scented.
