My parents lost their beloved pit bull a few years ago to a large western diamondback. They live in Noack, outside of Taylor and the rattlesnake population out there is rather large. The dog stepped in between my brother and the snake as he was about to walk right into his path and he started barking and jumping around and the snake struck him in the chest. This dog was one of the toughest and leanest 80 pound dogs you have ever seen even for a pit and he lasted 2 days and got medical attention right after the bite and spent 24 hours in the emergency clinic for animals. If that snake killed him I have no doubt it would have killed my mom or any other smaller framed human. I normally wouldn't kill a venomous snake but when I'm out there visiting I will since my mom is out there by herself a lot and she could accidentally walk right into one because like others have mentioned, they don't always warn you with their rattle. I think one should use some judgement in whether or not to kill a dangerous snake. It depends on where it is. I know the chances are low of getting bit but I know I couldn't live with myself if I let a DB go and a week later my parents get hit by likely the same one. I don't worry much about copperheads because they won't kill someone most likely but cotton mouths and rattlers can and should be dealt with accordingly depending on the situation and location.
I'm not new to fishing, or forums, but I'm new to fishing forums.
Just trying to gain knowledge from being gone from the sport for about 15 years. Did I miss anything?

They do kill people,a girl 3-4 years old was bitten at PK lake about 3 years ago that died. Had a friend that was bitten on the hand while fishing on the clear fork of the Brazos river with his family. his young girls were sitting next to him. There was a small flat rock between him and one of the girls and he put his hand down next to the rock and was bitten on the finger by a 10" rattler, he first thought it was a scorpion. He spent 6 days in hospital with his arm swelled up as big as his leg. I have spent 70 years on this earth, raised on a farm and ranch and will kill all copper heads and rattlers I can. Bull snakes, rat snakes get a free pass.Zanadu when did you move to Fork from the big city. Odds are I have spent more years in the woods and on the water than you are old

I bet when these tree hugging panzies lose a pet, have a child bitten by one, or spend a week laid up in the hospital they will change their minds. Even Texas isn't big enough to hide all the liberals.....

I bet when these tree hugging panzies lose a pet, have a child bitten by one, or spend a week laid up in the hospital they will change their minds. Even Texas isn't big enough to hide all the liberals..... Been bitten twice by copperheads, got lucky both times and it wasn't life threatening. Both times it was my fault for not paying attention and putting my hands where they shouldn't be. Have had dogs that were bitten, some died some didn't. (seems like the better the dog, the higher the odds of death) All of my gun dogs go through "snake training" which has helped limit the odds of them getting bitten. I raised my children to pay attention to where they stepped, put their hands or sat down while in an area that had snakes. None of them have been bitten and they are avid outdoorsmen, including my daughter. None of us are liberals...... With that said, if I find a venomous snake near the house or kennels it has to go. On the back of my place, they get a pass. Any rocks I carry in my boat are to throw at jet skiers, not snakes.

It's far easier to kill them all than to try to memorize the different species and only kill the venomous ones. I'd be willing to bet that most people that think they know the difference end up guessing wrong a lot more than they think. And it only costs about $1 to kill one with a .410 shell.
