first I suck at fishing so if my info sucks then sorry lol! Anyway fish off the bottom with fresh shad, shrimp, cut bait, worms, punch bait, pretty much anything smelly. Now catfish are moving into shallow areas of the lakes so you can literally throw a float in some shallow water and catch catfish with some examples listed above. Look for rocks and grass.
I only lie when I tell the truth.

Easiest way is a simple sliding cork setup with a good punch bait (CJ, sudden impact, secret seven are just a few baits that can be purchased easily) if you are familiar with bass fishing then you should be able to find structure such as timber and rocks. Start shallow looking for any fish that are spawning. If you don't get bit within ten to fifteen minutes then move around, if still not finding them shallow then move out to deeper timber. I. Would focus on channel cats because right now they are easier to find and it will entertain your son quite a bit, and as for you don't be surprised if you get hooked on catfishing and trade in all your bass stuff for cattin gear, it's happened to many of us including me. Your son is right, it is time to start catching, good luck to you both

i use a med heavy rod reel combo with at least 20lb test.a rod holder and some punchbait all i do is put a treble hook on a leader punch it with a. Stick pull out at a angle cast the line out as far as i can . Slide the rod in the holder tighten the line till its really tight and wait for my rod to bend then grab it and reel em in thats how ive been doing it and the last time i was out i caught 20 channel cats over easter weekend mostly on danny kings punchbait i prefer cjs punchbait but could not get it at the time you can find danny kings at walmart and cjs at acadamy .good luck and hope this helps also make sure you have the pliers handy
