I thought this carp I caught today was really interesting. I'd never actually seen a carp with markings like this before! At first I thought it was a Mirror Carp, then I thought it was just missing or damaged scales. But on close inspection, the didn't look damaged or missing, the scales were there, they were just really light and sort of irridescent. Very cool. And it has a cool, sort of crescent shaped marking on it's gill plate. On the other side, the fish had similiar markings along it's body, and another crescent shape like that on it's gill plate. Whatever it is, it's a very cool fish! I took a bunch more pictures of it that I may post later.

I've seen Koi that looked like that. The guy I was helping catch them said they were scaleless. Most of them still had some scales, but not as many. And the scales that they did have looked like that.

Looks in poor health to me. I don't recall ever catchin' one with that many oddities.

Thanks for the replies, guys!
TX - Those sound like a variety of Mirror Carp. Or in that case, Mirror Koi lol. Mirrors are common carp that have missing scale patches, or only a few scales, or large patches of irregular scales, and so on. Leathers are carp with no scales at all.
I thought of Koi though. I know there are at least a few Koi in GV, so perhaps it's the product of a Koi hybridizing with a regular Common Carp?
Thanks Sky!
I don't think it was in poor health at all, Alan. Just irregular. It fought much harder then the first carp of similiar size I'd caught that day, and appeared to be extremely healthy.
I don't think it was any more "unhealthy" then a Mirror Carp is unheathly, you know?
The Chosen Carp, lol. Nice.

What's up with the purple tint through it's body? I don't remember seein' that before, or maybe I don't look close enough, lol. Hell, I ain't a carp doctor...but I thought the fins looked like the fish was on it's last legs. I looked at the picture again today, and I noticed the purple coloring all over the fish....maybe it's royalty.

Purple? I don't really see purple..well, sort of. It was a very strangely colored fish, but in person, looked VERY healthy. The odd scales were very shiny and irridescent in the sun, but it was only out for a few seconds. Cloudy day, and the pics were taken in odd, low light.
