I used to catch them all of the time in central Texas. I used to love to put them on their back, rub their belly and watch them close their eyes.

It looks more like a lizard than a frog.

Awesome photo, I used to catch the Texas Horned Lizards in my backyard when I was a kid. Looking at your photo sure brings back some memories. Thanks for sharing. And yes, we did call them horny toads when we were little, lol.

I've never seen one in the wild. That's cool.

They follow the large red ants and feed on them..They have not really declined in Texas, they have moved following the red ants as the large ants relocate to other areas and moved to other states as well. The fire ants moved into the red ants areas and destroyed the red ants nest/mounds red ant eggs and red ant adults.Red ants can not survive with the fire ants so the moved out of their area ... The horned toads followed their food source so they may survive..some counties in Texas now have horned toads now when they had none in the past...some counties have seen am increase in populations in horned toads as well as red ants as they are on a constant move to stay ahead of the fire ants for survival... urban development is not helping them either.. .

Lots of them in West Texas around Big Lake and Rankin. They eat Harvester ants. I see them in the oil patch almost everyday out here. Much more rare in north and east Texas nowadays

Anyone see any of those much larger horned toads? We used to call them Giant horned toads.
