My question here is do you go with the bigger screen or go with the updated technology. Is the HD SI and DI worth stepping down to a smaller screen. What are the pro's and con's of these two units. Wish I could get the 999 and not have to make a decision.

HD does not mean High Definition. The 998c HD SI just means it has LED backlighing and the former 998c SI has CCFL backlighting.
The HD in the 899ci HD SI is just two letters that have no significance, carried over from the 898c HD SI model.
The 899 will have a faster processor, shipped with a lower quality transducer, have some less capabilities that are going to be added back via software update. The faster processor will give it longer updateable lifetime than either 998 model.
As far as Side Imaging BIGGER is better
Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, SOLIX 10 G3, Helix 15 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, Helix 8 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G4N, SOLIX 12 G3, MEGA 360, MEGA LIVE TL , MEGA LIVE 2, Xplore 10

Whats the amp draw for those units?
And does faster processor mean more amps?

However the new 899 has the smaller imaging transducer and the image quality is not near as good as the old 998. If it were my choice I would pick the 998. I don't understand why Humminbird did that with the transducer. I guess for a cheaper price.

If you go to a HD transducer do you get the better image with the 899?

Some new software will upgrade its capabilities.

Wayne, you have confused me. Disregarding price, which of these units would you purchase and why. I am in the market, but can't figure this one out.
How would you rate the 998cHDSI? And does this unit have a large enough screen for side imaging.
I would like to have a 1198, but it will not fit on my console and I cannot justify the price.
Thanks

Thanks For the Side Imaging function, BIGGER is better (that says it all). Any of the Side Imaging units are "large enough". The 998ci HD SI has a larger display than the 899ci HD SI. Both do well with the 360 accessory also. Images on the SI view are in relation to the SI range setting. You choose how much to dislay. 2D and DI images are based on the depth. It is typical to have 100' to 200' of coverage with Side Imaging, that is 50' to 100' on each side. Usually you won't be fishing in depths that are close to the SI range setting. If both units have the same settings, the images on the 998 will be larger and easier to see. Images on a 1198/1199 would be even bigger and easier to see.
