Wife is out of town next weekend, so I'm taking the kids down to the coast for a little fishing. Whats the water been like? If the water has been good I'd like to take them out on the North jetty. Other wise we'll just hit Packery jetty. Any reports?

I was there yesterday...winds were high and all I caught was some whiting and hard head but I didn't get a chance to fish the jetty, just the surf and the pier behind stripes.

One report a few days ago from a CCFB customer; Good number/size of whiting in surf one "calmer wind " day on fish bites & fresh dead shrimp. Couple reds as well. They also fished a CC ship channel pier, caught 5-6 slot black drum, & close to 50 gafftop up to 5-6 lb. Another CCFB buyer was down week or so ago, caught a ton of Smacks off both Packery jetties & south jetty in Port A. Basically every other cast according to him. If thinking north jetty, check wind direction, forecast out of north through Friday I think? Surf side of north jetty might be dirty on Saturday. Sargassum has been pretty bad on incoming tide. Heard some trout showing up in surf, still a few weeks behind schedule IMO. Good luck, we'll be around the CC bay through next week. To follow up fishing was SLOW. We made it to the North jetty about 2pm on Saturday and over there the weed wasn't too terrible on the surfside. But the waves were breaking over a good part of the walkway. The water was about chocolate milk unless you got about to the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the jetty where it looked like there was a nice color break. But it just being me and 2 kids, bring out a fully loaded cart we had to stop at the 2 foot drop down about a third of the way down the walkway. I really wasn't looking forward to pulling a cart down that stretch of black slime anyway. We set up channel side and drowned shrimp for an couple hours without even a pinfish hitting. Saw a few schools of 8-10" mullet running up and down but no smaller bait was in the water. We also caught a glimpse of a 30-36" tarpon cruise by. Of course we had no bait in the water at the moment. My older boy called me over to help on a snag, it wouldn't budge so I tried breaking it off. Line popped and I felt the sting of the sinker smack my gut. Flipping thing hurt but oh well that happens right? Then I felt it pulling and saw it was the hook not the lead that hit me. After some minor field surgery my kids were a little freaked out and didn't want to fish anymore. Looked at the time and we had just missed the 4:10 pickup boat. With two hours to wait they wanted to go play on the beach were it was "safer". After about an hour I had my fill of digging in the sand with a stick and since we still had some shrimp... First cast about 10 feet in the retrieve I hook a rocket. After a couple good runs I realize I was pretty undergunned with trout tackle, but still managed to turn the fish back to the jetty. Got him just close enough to get a quick burst of color about 30" long, and he made a right hand turn on a rock and that was the end of that. Not sure if it was the same small tarpon I saw cruising or a bull red. That I "might" have hooked my first Tarpon was enough to take some of the sting from the hook away. Hit Charlie's Pasture that night about 10pm and it was covered in bait of all sorts. We managed to get three trout in the first 30 minutes but after that the bait dissapeared and so did most of the fish. Stuck it out until midnight when it would from " Dad were aren't gonna leave yet right???" to "Dad, I think the fish went to sleep. I want to sleep too". Even though I can already tell only one is gonna be a diehard like me, I am still thankful they both really like fishing and had a great weekend even without the fish cooperating.
Oh and if you were at Charlie's Pasture at the same time, you probably met my oldest boy Luke. I think he went and talked to about half the pier.
