The little lake I fish is very clear and full of grass. Not sure how deep, but let's say 30 to 40 feet at most. I've been fishing the creeks and catching plenty of 1-2 pound fish with the occasional 3 pound fish. I know there are bigger fish in there but not sure where to look or what to throw. To complicate matters, I fish from a kayak and don't have a fishfinder. On the other hand, this lake is so clear that you can see dropoffs and points, just not mid-lake bottom structure. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I am in the same position as you. I got in my yak and went across to the other side to see 6+ swimming in 3 foot of water around cypress roots, stumps, and fallen limbs and tress. I would say throw on a Carolina rig and a worm and get a good feel any formations

Huddleston for days wink Fun way to fish for big bass, and even the 2-3lb'ers will take it... it's a big boy swim bait. Also they have nice smaller grass minnows if you want to swap out on days the bigger one isn't working for you and you want the quantity 1-2lbers. Something authentic looking will go a long way there, and also if you're fishing topwater type baits, same thing applies... sometimes going smaller, simpler patterns and translucent skirts, less strands, slimmer profile, so they can't identify it as readily.

The big bass will tend to earn and own the best territory/cover/structure on a big pond/small lake. Without a FF, this is difficult early in the year, because they are most likely in thick shallow cover. The bigger fish are easier to catch (for me) in the summer--they have to eat more to maintain their size in hotter water which speeds up their metabolism. They are also easier to locate and more exposed, they will seek deeper, cooler water once it gets over 100 deg F. If you don't have a FF by summer, go to the middle of the pond/small lake and drag a Crig around finding areas where the structure/cover changes. Mark those spots with some fish markers. You will probably get bit on the Crig itself, but if you don't, go back to those spots and throw out a heavy drop shot next to those fish markers and just wait to get bit--it might take a while, so bring a sandwich/apple/jerky to chew on while you wait.

Jig or Senko...top water is a big fish treat - try night fishing, gin clear lakes get a lot of nocturnal feeding for the big girls...I love this Bill Dance quote " an elephant will eat a peanut..." so dont go nuts thinking it is a bait issue...good luck !

Thanks, everyone! Unfortunately, the powers that be don't allow dynamite or even hand crank generators. They're pretty closed minded.

On the Huddleston recommendation, what works in clear Texas lakes? I'm seeing trout imitations and I'm pretty sure this lake has neither trout nor gizzard shad in it. I'm still intrigued, though.

10" worm. Like KC said, at night.

Until you get a depth finder on that kayak you cannot stay over the outer edges of the grass like you should. That is where the big fish are. PM me and I will help you set up the right bait.
