Anybody started their chum buckets yet for the summer time channel bite? Whats your preference and why? Milo? Wheat? Or just range cube it and forget the mess? How long does it need to go for so it doesnt float? 5 days?

We always used maze but I hear wheat works better if you can find it. As far as how long to let it "brew" the norm is until it stops bubbling. After that it should sink without issues.

I use milo. I start by rinsing the milo off before you put it in the trash can or what ever. There is alot of crud, sticks, dirt and hulls that will float to the top when you are rinsing it.

I have a bucket of milo from 2012 that I have added leftover shad to in hopes of enhancing the flavor. I can't convince myself to take the lid off while I'm sober.

Most take no head to proper instruction and choose to fast track
Milo sours pretty quick,if you let it set till it forms a black crust its then ready
If you stir down that crust and let it set till the next crust forms
you will then have proper channel cat chum.(Blues and Flats have no interest in garbage)
No need for minnows, cheese, shad to be added
It will draw them like Fri at the Food Stamp Office
FYI,adding shad or minnows only draws the turtles in faster so its best not to

I have 3 buckets brewing now. How much water do you want over the grain? I have about an inch or two above it now. Has been going about a month.

This is True.
Good-Advice.

Sounds like i need to go ahead and get mine going.

Catboss, define proper instruction? cool
Container, grain, yeast, water over the top of it, put in the sun, loose lid, add water if necessary, let it crust up, stir it under, let it crust up again, go fishing. Sound about right? Or am i missing something?

An inch or so is fine, just dont let it dry out
Be patient and wait for the crust.
TIP:
Save old stretched out tube socks, when filled with the soured mix they can be thrown from the bank
or dropped from a boat.
Use a large hole funnel to fill with about 2lbs and tie off the end
Gloves should be worn smile

I use milo

put in a 5 gal bucket, fill 2/3's with milo add a couple beers and cover with water.

Place in direct sunlight. During the summer time in San Antonio I have made chum that stank in 3-4 days.

He's not kidding about the gloves. Not only does it stink, but it'll burn your hands if it's ripe enough. I know my bucket will turn a 13" gizzard shad into a backbone in 24 hours.

I use milo. However, I had 50 pounds of corn get wet so I am using it. There is no great science to it. Sink some soured grain. Fish 6 inches of the bottom with punch bait and it will happen.

Best thing we ever used to bait a hole was a plastic floating minnow bucket. Drill 2 holes in each float (1 in top, 1 in bottom). Fill bucket about half way with chum. Tie a rope to bucket handle and sink it to bottom. Fish will come to chum smell but not fill up on grain. Also no fish throwing up sour grain in boat or livewell. When your done with that spot pull up bucket and dump out grain to keep them coming in. Repeat at next spot or next trip. You look around at garage sales you can find a few of these floating minnow buckets for a few bucks and they will last you several years.
We have used everything from toe sacks to plastic sacks with holes and these worked the best.

This is the best idea I have heard yet.
