I am a pilot for a living. So I get to fly over Lewisville on a regular basis. I have noticed, more times than not, that water is being let out of the lake. Considering lake levels, letting water out doesn't make sense unless there is a downstream reason. Anybody have an idea, or know why? Just curious.

New bridge construction, work on the dam and they have to keep a certain flow in the river. It sucks I know.

A lot of lakes are selling the water to the cities for drinking and water yards and filling swimming pools. IF they kept it in the lake they wouldn't make any money from it, but selling it in summer brings in a premium price!

By law, they have to maintain the historical flow of the stream below the dam.

Pretty sure that is why most of the reservoirs were built. That said I do not agree with wasting water so I have started showering with the Mrs during this drought bannana2

They got to keep that trinity river flowing. The big drop we had last summer did it in for us this year, COE were letting a lot of water out then they cut back a bit. And I believe they been all winter etc..

Actually the water is being released into the river and it's stopped by the Carrollton dam near Sandy lake road. that's where it's picked up by two water treatment plants for Dallas and Carrollton. Not much of the water gets any further down the river

When and under what conditions do they release the crazy amount of water that basically floods the whole river and it's levies for at least a week?

Letting the water out on some kind of consistant basis helps keep the springs in the river from closing off. Also, we have to share with people down stream.

Actually, domestic water usage accounts for less than 10 percent of overall water use. Agriculture and energy plants account for nearly 80% of total water usage. thumb
