My son wants to buy a new Ford but he is tossed between a 5.0 or Ecoboost motor ? Opinions?

The gas mileage in the Ecos haven't been quite as advertised. My uncle bought one a few months ago and said he wishes he'd just gotten the 5.0 but to be fair he complains about all vechicles.

It's the torque for towing that sells the e-boost.

At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

The eco competes with the 6.2l powerwise and the 5.0l economy wise. What's not to like about that?

x2

I know several people who recently purchased ecoboosts and they are all happy.

X3 - just bought a 4x4 supercrew xlt in March, overall average is around 16, power is what makes it a great truck.

i have a 2012 f150 w/ecoboost. lots of city driving get about 15 mpg but on a hwy trip have gotten 22. pulling my 8500 lb. 35 ft travel trailer mileage is 7.5 to 9.5 depending on the wind direction. except for the mileage, I hardly know the trailers back there with the ecoboost.

I have a 2013 5.0 ... No issues towing a 20' skeeter. The reason I didn't go ecoboost was cost and potential repair bill when the turbocharger blows up in 5 years.

Diesels have turbos and are long touted for their longevity... I don't understand.

^^^this

So many people are scared of the turbos on this engine...engines have been turbo charged for decades now and it's only growing in popularity...I wonder why?

Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

This discussion has been going on ever since Ford introduced the EcoBoost. I have owned both and they best thing he can do is shop around, drive them both and then a make a decision. Both pulled my 20' bay boat without issue. At times you would forget its back there.

2cents

I also agree with this. Either will do what 100% of people in the 1/2 ton market are looking for. I have a 2011 5.3 chevy which is anemic in the power department when compared to either of those motors and Ive hauled up to 2500 lbs of feed(in the bed) and a full mounded bed of fresh cut mesquite wood that I have no clue how much it weighed, up to about 7,000 lbs on a flatbed for multiple 200 mile trips without issue.

The power that the ecoboost offers at less than 2500 rpm is what draws my interest and most likely will draw my business on my next purchase. I don't like hearing 4500+ rpm with a loaded trailer behind me.

Long time GM guy who switched. I have a 2012 5.0 4x4 with max tow pkg. Tows, rides and drives wonderfull. Love the truck. Went with the 5.0 due to long term repair cost. I am a shop foreman for a new car dealer. You cannot compare a gas engine turbo to a diesel turbo. Pressure vs. RPM very different. 1 eco boost turbo will run you $1500.00 for parts and around $500.00 labor. Drove both when looking saw very little difference in power or pulling. My $.o2.

You must not have put any real weight behind them if you can't tell much difference. And people keep worrying about turbo failure, yet in the real world turbo failures have been rare on the ecoboost.
