Hey guys my 17th birthday is coming up this Wednesday the 7th and I'm looking to spend about $200 on my first Baitcasting reel and a rod to go along with it. I will be limited to shop at Academy so can anyone point me in the right direction for a reel and a rod under $200. Preferably not a combo. Thank you

Save $100 and buy baits, you can get a good setup for $100.

This gets my vote for your first baitcast there is no need in spending 200, spend the other 100 on gear and tackle

For first one get a h20 mettle and a h20 ethos rod and you will be set and have money left to spend! Or if you want a little more get the duckett ghost and a mettle

Whatever u do, buy the H2O mettle. U will not be dissappointed. Save the left over cash for other lures/gear

I bought my first baitcasting setup a few months back and was recommended to buy the H20 mettle as well, very happy with that purchase. I also bought a Berkeley Lightning rod to go with it. Ended up with a good rig for less than $100.

I disagree with most. The mettle ain't bad but it is a far cry from quality buy a h2o ethos rod and a lews tournament mg

Falcon Bucoo and Academy has Shimano Citicas on sale for 80 bucks. Get some sale priced trokars (3.99) and a few bags of worms and brushhawgs with the left over 20. Duckett Ghost has served me well thus far as well.

What's a good gear ratio to start off with? Im looking at the h2o manic that has a 6:3:1 ratio. Thanks for the replies so far

The problem I had with the Mettle was when I set the hook the base of my palm would push the release button on the left and the side of the reel would fall off. Finally one day it fell off and went over the side of the boat into the water.

Has anyone else had this problem?

If your limit is 200-spend 200. If you cheap out this year next year you will be asking for what you should of got this year. Get something nice and next year you'll be asking for a pair of Costas, a couple of yellow magics, etc.
