Typically whenever I've gone fishing, I've been put on fish and told exactly what to do. Well I am tired of that, and I want to be able to find/catch fish for myself. Unfortunately I never paid attention to my surroundings when put on fish. Now I am here to ask you, what should I look for to find the catfish? I want to be the guy that puts people on fish. I am willing to do the leg work, just need some help getting pointed in the right direction. Any help/input/opinions I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What has happed to you does not define who you are-
HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

We have been catching channel cats in shallow water next to bulkheads....2 to 5 FOW. Blues have been good on mud flats anywhere from 6 to 17 feet of water. Fish are being caught under corks and on bottom. If using a cork, run bait at least 2 feet under cork in deeper water. Chicken hearts have been working very well. Bottom fishing has worked best for R&R. Jugs on flats should get you some fish. If you are in the vicinity of a bridge, fish down between the piling...from the bottom to about halfway up. If you can find a weeded shoreline close to a dropoff, try fishing from the weeds to about halfway down the dropoff till you find them. Bottom structure can pay off for bigger blues. Hope this helps.

Go fishin! Write it down if you have to. Paying attention to whats going on is the key to your success or failure! You can't catch them on the couch! I still log hours of YouTube, this forum, and any other material I can get ahold of. But spend the time on the water. Learn good knots you can be consistent with. Learn different rigs. Then Go Fishing! Then when your done there go fishing again! Trust it is an investment process! Gear, boat items, gas money and most of all time! And guess what? Go Fishing! And just when you think you got things figured out you'll figure out that you don't. But to get past what you don't know......... yep! Go fishing........ and there are great people on the forum. And most of your questions can and probably will get answered on here. But my advise...... GO FISHING! Lol hope this was helpful!

I would suggest familiarizing yourself with the major patterns of the fish you are after. What time of year they are up shallow spawning and chasing the shad spawn and what time they are deeper. What types of cover they like.
I fish mainly lakes and look for yella cats more than anything. I find them along structure specifically more than a certain depth. My number one producer is focusing on submerged creek/river channels. Fishing summer time sharp depth changes have been producers for me. Hope it will help you. And like others said use your electronics, the modern ones capabilities are unreal compared to what I use(basically a depth finder).
