Hook sets are free. If you think its a fish, swing.

I fish jigs alot, if I switch to a tx rig after I tend to set the hook too fast sometimes you need to give em a little time. Also depending on your lure 12 overhead may be best the jigs and chatterbaits I use always button the roof of the mouth with 12 oclock hook sets side swing will just pop it out their mouth alot

From my fishing experience I have noticed that most of the bigger bass above 7 pounds I have caught they have a very suttle bite, can hardly feel it on soft plastics. sometimes just gets heavy, seems like the little ones hit it harder. its better to be safe than sorry and set that hook in the biggest stump you can find lmao

I hate it when someone tells me, " I think I got a bite" then sits and wait to fill the fish. If I think theres a fish, I'm setting the hook
Thanks,

I've set hook into rocks... if I feel anything get funny on the retrieve that isn't a known object I've found exploring a spot with bait previously... I'm setting hook all up in it. Everything we spend including time on the water, is for those triumphant moments we magically pull it all together to yank a fish from the water... whether if I don't catch a fish with what's on my line I'll probably pick something else up sooner than later anyways, so I don't fret too much over losing them... it also keeps me from buying tons of expensive gimmicky baits... or not counting on them so much to cover water at least when a classic cheapo bait will suffice and let me not be stingy with the hook sets.

I don't know how fast my hook set is but today i broke my seat pedestal on the hook set. I fell off the front deck between the two consoles. Threw my $250/$300 spinning set up out the boat- Gone! Sore back broke pedestal lost rod and reel. Maybe i need to go on a diet! 6'2" 275! The pole broke about 6" from bottom! I usually fish with my boys but today my wife went with me , she thought i was dead. I was worried about my setup and she didnt even realize i lost it!

This is my approach on hook sets. When im fishing tourneys, if the tiniest thought comes to me that something is different during this particular retrieval.... Im swinging on em. Now that doesnt mean every time I tick a rock or stump that I swing. You really need to be tuned into the bait that you choose in terms of rate of fall, behavioral characteristics of that plastic in the water and etc...Also many times you wont feel a thing, therefore I pay very, very close attention to my line(on every single cast). It will either take off, jump sharply to one side, tightens up or goes slack, out of nowhere it will seem. Basically, if you say or think..... is that a fish? The instant that occurs, you should be in mid hook set. There is usually no room for error in a tournament But when im leisure fishing, I just concentrate on gathering information as I fish. Doesnt bother me to loose a fish when not in tournament.
