I have to admit, mine's pretty quick. The only time I let them "chew on it" is if I've got bit a few times and come up empty on the hookset or had half-worms when I reeled in. In all honesty, I haven't had a fish swallow a hook on me in 4 or 5 years.

anytime your bait isn't doing what you think it should be give it the hammer. Like the guy said, hook sets are free and if you come up empty then that's a little more info to process. sometimes my body sets the hook before I even realize what I've done. As far as how fast, this ought to cover it..299,792,458 m/s

Good read - I know mine is too slow. I always think was that a stick I just bumped into or something, because getting stuck in trees sucks but I need to set the hook and deal with the consequences of a bad guess later. I am better at top water, frogs, buzz baits, spooks, poppers, etc.. And I think the reason why is that I never panic when I see I fish hit it, I reel in the slack quickly and once I feel the fish, I set the hook. In general I also think I fish slower with topwater, which I know isn't the topic here, but I believe it is because I am constantly seeing the bait and expecting to get hit at anytime. With plastics, I think I fish too fast and wait too long on the hook set. No telling how many fish I have missed....

When in doubt, I set the hook. The only exception to this is when I'm fishing topwater. Then, I try to not set the hook until I feel the fish - but still, I sometimes take it away from the fish.

Another thing to learn when you are taking this new step is to learn how to set the hook with more power, a lot of people set the hook by swinging the rod straight up at 12 o'clock, by doing this you are losing pressure and it is not penetrating the hook all the way thru 60 percent of the time, when you feel a bite start to try to swing the rod to the side not straight up , you will have a lot more power, better hook set's, you can practice this with a old battery, tie your line on the handle of a old battery, and jerk, and you will learn that if you jerk the rod straight up the battery will barley move and you will probley brake your line , now try it by jerking to the side, the battery will fly off the ground , this is because you have more power and pressure, I learned all of this stuff when I started to fish flw , I was watching a lot of people and I mean when some of them would set the hook the fish would fly out of the water , lol

I'm sorry bigfish but isn't that a bit of a silly analogy? Trying to lift a battery as opposed to tilting it over! I will agree that a straight up hookset may not be as powerful but sideways isn't either. A 1 to 2 o'clock is best. But to each their own.

GOARMY, That's what I am talking about 3 o'clock, And if you try with a battery you will see where you are failing at on your hook set's, if you think you have a strong hook set try it, if the battery just fall's over , your hook set is not that strong, now if you can jerk it off the ground and battery move's you have a strong hook set, you have to think about it this way, a bigger bass 8 pound's and up has a thicker jaw then a fish 8 pound's and under , there for you want to make sure you have anuff power to put that hook through the jaw if you don't you will prob. loss them.

sorry I used the wrong clock time. I meant 1 or 2. 3 is too far sideways. But Like I said if it works, use it.

I agree 100%. Sideways is bad. You want straight up and slightly to your dominate side, right for most of us. You're trying to put the hook thru the bone in he roof of the mouth of the fish. Setting the hook sideways forces it into the corner of the mouth and reduces your power on the set. If someone is breaking line off during the hookset, use stronger line, don't modify your hookset. There are a few exceptions. . .but not many.

How can you tell the angle of the hook in the fish's mouth when you set the hook? I don't think you are really "twisting" the hook into either the top of his mouth or the side based on the direction you set the hook especially considering there's probably somewhere between 10 and 40 feet of line between you and the fish.

As for when to set the hook, I have never done the "on point" thing and it drives me crazy to see someone else do it. The only reason I might hesitate even slightly is to get the slack out of my line.
