Hey guys,

I just caught wind of a brand new Hobie PA 12 being stolen here in San Angelo. I spoke with the company owner who sold the yak. It was olive and the only accessories installed was the stand assist bar and a mirage drive leash. It was stolen from a trailer in the LaQuinta parking lot. Chains were cut. The thief also got two mountain bikes and another kayak. I don't know the brand of the other yak.

If you all happen to be out and about and possibly see this yak, please PM me what info you can get and I will send it on.

Thanks,
D

That stinks, especially being brand new and all...hope the owner gets it back. Thieves suck

This is a huge fear of mine. I was considering buying a heavy chain lock that is covered with some sort of wrap from walmart but it was only 4ft and I am not sure what to secure it to anyway on the kayak nor the truck. Does anyone have a %100 thief proof system for truck bed hauling or is it all just deterrents?

There are some tiedown straps with alarms available; I think ACK can get you some. Otherwise; 12 gauge shotgun, #1 buck, spend the night in the truck.

All you can really do is deter the theft; if a thief wants it they'll take it.

I switched my auto and homeowners' insurance to Farmers last year and they were able to insure my kayak and trailer for $100 per year; well worth it in my opinion.

It's a bit tough to ID a stolen kayak if it doesn't have anything distinguishing about it. The stand assist bar is the closest to that but still not enough to probably justify calling one in as "meets the description of a stolen yak". To help anyone with theft recovery, make note (and pics) of any permanent non-standard features of the yak such extra holes you have have drilled as well as not so permanent such as certain stickers, etc. I don't know if the owner feels comfortable posting the VIN number so if someone sees one matching the descr, they can take a check. I would guess most legitimate owners wouldn't be opposed to someone taking a look at it.......but just be prepared for what you want to do if the number actually matches. wink
