What is the correct way of getting tags for a homemade trailer built for hauling kayaks. See a for VTR-305-A. See
Weight: Empty weight_____________ carrying capacity________________ gross weight______________
Empty weight I can determine from the public scales. Carrying capacity, I have a 1500lb axle. How to determine the gross weight?
Newbie at this.

axle capacity-weight of trailer= load capacity.

I walked into the tax office and told them i had a trailer i needed to register. They asked if it was manufactured or homemade. I didn't know, I found it in the weeds at the farm. She told me she was registering it as homemade and took my money!

They told me that it didn't need to be titled if the carrying weight was less than 4,000 pounds...just register it. If your carrying a kayak and some gear you're way under the 4,000 pound mark.

I brought my Bill of Sale, old plates, and photos of the build process. I told her it was home built and that the capacity was way less than 4,000 lbs.

What was weird was that the license plate and guy's name on the BoS didn't match. I kind of gave her a blank stare and a shrug of the shoulders, she took my money, and handed me new plates.

It all depends on the county you are registering it in. I had to have mine weighed on a certified scale. Next step was to have a Johnson County auto theft detective come out to inspect the trailer to see that it was not stolen. After that I had to take pictures of the trailer and take all of that to the tax office. The biggest pain was getting the appointment set up with the auto theft detective. I am sure they have much more important things to be doing....

for anyone having issues, dont give up! keep at it & remember that in the end they want your $.
