I own 2 of the Gen 1 s STX's and love them. I was planning on buying the Gen 3 but after speaking to some of the pros who repair them, I will pass.

Great reels. The only "bad" thing would be having to take off the side cover to adjust the brakes. Abu for life.

I have a Gen 2 and Gen 3. Like the Gen 3 a lot more than the 2. That said I really like the Lews Tournament and BB1 Pro for the same $$.

I have two of the Gen 3 STX's and I've not had one single problem out of them after fishing them for over a year. I clean and lube them about 3 times a year, with the occasional drop of oil on the bearings to keep them smooth.

I have 3 gen 1 and 2 gen 3 STX. I also have 4 SX. I have not had a single problem about of any of the revo reels I own. I try to get mine cleaned and lubed 1 time a year in the winter while I am busy hunting but I didn't this year . I won't buy another brand reel as long as they are making revo reels. Coach

After using a Gen 3 revo STX, a Gen 3 Revo Premier, and a JDM (Japan import) Revo Elite 8, side by side on the same and on different rods. I can say that I feel the STX is their best all around reel. The Premier demands a well trained thumb but it will out cast any reel made. (even the Lew's.... Here comes the haters, but compare the spool weight between them and call me a liar!) The JDM Elite 8 is a little more forgiving than the Premier, but the STX can be set up to cast any lure in any weather. I'll throw a large buzzbait straight into the wind with no problem. I use it on my rod that I might have the largest range of lures or shapes. The Premier, I just use for small worms and jigs. I think that the perfect reel for the average guy like me is an STX with a carbon handle upgrade for $40. Spend an hour understanding how each of the brakes work and you'll be reworded and hardly have to tweek them. The 8-1 ratio is great because I can slow down easier than speed up throughout the day.
Also, they don't advertise it, but some like magnetic brakes and some like centrifugal brakes. Some like both, so you can always keep the both on or turn off one or the other. Wide range of options is real nice to have.

I just bought one of these and the owners manual is worthless. Do you know how to fine tune the breaking systems? I know how to get in and adjust it but can't find any more info than that.

Set the spool tension as usual. (lure barely drops) Then I set the magnetic brake at half and turned off 3 of the 6 brake pins inside on the spool. If it wanted to backlash early, I turn on one more brake pin. Now I mostly just adjust the magnetic brake dial on the outside depending on the lure and I pretty much leave the brake pins with 4 on and 2 off. But every one has their way of casting, that is just what works with me.
