After a lot of saving, finally making my first trip to Amistad this weekend. I know the fishing seems to be down as of late, but I usually fish at canyon lake so it wont take a lot for me to consider the trip a success grin. Wondering if anyone could share any pointers for the lake, what to look for, any tactics that have worked as of late, etc. Staying at rough canyon rentals on the devils river. Would like to keep my fishing in that general area if I can get away with it, but whatever it takes.

Don't overlook the top water bite down there. A white or bone colored Spook or popping bait is the choice. I seem to catch a lot more on those slower moving baits than on a buzzbait type lure. You can lure them out of even deep water because of the water clarity. The Devils River arm has a lot of smallmouth in it. It's tough down there, but when you find them, you can catch some good ones. A white with chartreuse stripe swimbait is good too. But, I'm a plastics type fisherman. So, find a drop off on a point and throw a Texas rig on it. Purple sided plastics, watermelon red and blue seem to be good colors to start with. A fluke on a Carolina rig will work too. I find the mouth of the Devils River arm to be the best for bigger fish. You can fish a Carolina rig there, but I find the Texas rig to come out of the underwater trees a lot easier than a Carolina rig. The Florida strain largemouth are in that area, as the main lake are native strain. Feel free to holler at me by email if you need any help. The

That's a tremendous help hag, thanks for responding. In your experience, what depth should I focus on this time of year?

You need to remember that their surface and water temps have far exceeded anything North of there. There will be some deep fish. But, I always had my best luck this time of year from 8 to 12 foot. If you give Dean (the manager) at Reelyn's Tackle a call, I know he will help you out big time. They're right on the lake and the owner is one of the guides down there. Tell him I gave you his contact info. His number is 830-774-3474

Go up the river a mile or two, you'll see tree's on both sides. I used a Yellow magic and did pretty well in that area two weeks ago. Also got a few off the points right before you hit the main lake. It was really windy so i stayed up the river. The White bass were jumping in the boat, caught a load of them. Have fun!!!!

Fished the area you're staying at 2 weeks ago and caught lot of numbers on a watermelon wacky rig. I missed the topwater bite as I only fished the middle of the day.

I hear it's still tough down there. Regardless, Amistad is a beautiful lake and you could get to know the lake. They will start biting again one day!

9 days and counting till my 1st trip of the year down there.. anyone fishing the Mexico side? I haven't heard much about Mexico and trying to decide whether or not to buy a licence. Not to Jack a thread but not worth a new thread...

Some of the guys from our club fished Mexico but didn't come back with much, caught just a few and no size, save you money. I caught more and they were all on topwater, all day. Had one around 8 blow up on top, had me shaking in my shoe's.

Started out around noon today, fished the mouth of the devils river. Caught a few on Senkos and creature baits between 2 and 4 pounds. All fish very healthy and fought twice their size!
