New to this site, been browsing all the threads in relation to gar fishing from the bank. I'm aware of the fact that aren't many places to do this, but there has to be SOMEWHERE. I'm wondering if any of you fine gents know of such places? I live in Austin, willing to travel. Would be great to find a secret spot close to my home base. Read reports of gar being caught below dam in Granger, TX mostly Longnose (which I'm OK with), but looking for Alligator Gar. I'm a catch and release fisherman only, trying to help this species maintain good numbers. Appreciate any commentary, thank you guys!

I've been seeing a lot of spotted gar in the Trinity River in Fort Worth. The last week I saw one by itself and the next day I saw four or five in a different area.

Anywhere on the Brazos river should have fishable populations of gar. If you can drive under the bridge, you can fish it. If Brenham isn't too far,and you can go on a Friday morning,I'll take you and show you how it's done. Might even catch a fish or two.

The closest area for Alligator Gar in numbers enough to actually fish for them, would be the Trinity river near 287, near Richland Chambers resovior. The Brazos in Glenrose has a ton of Longnose Gar, maybe a few Agar.

Another good place that may not be that far from you would be the Victoria/Port Lavaca area. There are some huge ones swimming the bayous and brackish water around the area. And for the most part, you would not need a boat.
Also now that I think about it, we have caught some big ones wade fishing in San Antonio Bay off Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.

Based on the amount of research I've done, a little bit north of that location is the most "northern" part of the Trinity that has enough Agar to make it worth your time to go after them. Chances of more dense populations of Agar will only get better the further south you travel.

That's what I'm starting to figure out... To bad I live up north of Dallas along the Elm Fork... I've only had one sighting of an Agar up here But to the original creater of this thread, most highway crossings will give you some sort of bank access. Whether or not they are good places to fish I'm not sure... Doesn't hurt to try and find out!

Ok,Brazos south of Whitney. Heck the Colorado river south of Bastrop is good. Buddy used to fish it but said it was slower fishing than the Brazos. A lot better than fooling around behind Granger dam. I'm from Taylor. There isn't that many big or hell, can't remember any alligator gars from there.

I've been starting to see quite a few in the Bosque river in Waco. Had one scare the snot out of me in my kayak last weekend. All the ones I've seen have been in the 12-14" range cruising the shallows.

Your best chance to catch a alligator gar is undoubtably Falcon Lake.. We got tons of em.. Good bank access here in the Veleno in Zapata.. And we don't mind if you take a few home.. They are very active right now.. Come get you some..

I caught a 4' gator gar from the bank on the Brazos near College Station about a month ago.....prolly 25-30 pounds. Got him all the way to the bank and my 20-pound mono snapped when my buddy grabbed hold of the line. But I kayak the Brazos around here pretty often and trust me, there are plenty of em.
