I was floored!! I have never seen anything like this in the wild before. This guy had to be pushing 100 pounds easy! My daughter actually spotted him and I quickly grabbed my camera phone and took a few pics before he took off into the brush.

Is this a native of texas???

Is he still in your yard?? That would be something for the exhibits or zoo. Extremely rare for them to get that big. It is definitely a dry land variety of some kind and not a "loggerhead" (which resides in the water). eek

that ia a gallopigos turtle,,someones pet that got out ,,catch it and turn it in,,you have to buy those from pet stores

my best bet is that it escaped from the wild game preserve about 1/2 mile away at hwy 46 and 3159 just south of canyon lake....that or like you guys said...someone's pet

it was still really cool to see...my daughter was loving him

Here you go-->sulcata tortoise. Grows to over 3 feet, and is the largest tortoise in Africa. They are sold as pets. The coloration can vary from light, straw colors to darker browns, depending upon diet. The high peaks on the upper shell are also dependent upon diet. The most distinguishing features are the shape of the head, the heavily spurred front legs/feet, and the prominently ridged edges of the shell.

That bad boy is an oooooold one, and someone is probably looking for him/her. Too bad you didn't capture it.
