I am wanting to take some kids fishing for their first time and I want it to be a fun trip. I have read on here that sweet corn is a good chum and bait. Should I bait the hole a few days before or do they come to the chum in a few hours. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Bait it for a few days if you can. You'll probably get a mix of carp and cats

after casting out , make sure you loosen the drag because carp pull hard when hooked and are known for taking the poles in the water. once they are hooked you can tighten the drag as you play thema little at a time but dont tighten all the way because that could mean a hook pull or a busted line thumb

i chum on the spot when i fish. the bite doesnt turn up till at least 30 min in, i chum probably 1/2 a can to start and 1/2- full handfulls periodically when i stop getting bites. or every 30 minutes or so, i usually go through 3 can on a half day(6 hour)

dont chum too much at one time, the ifsh will actually ave a harder time finding your bait/hook, i would never go more than 2 handfulls or so, not that the carp cant hold the food capacity, its just not as productive when you have thousands of kernels in the water and you expect the fish to find the one with the hookon it....

My preference is to chum small and bait big. The idea being fish will find your bait easier because it stands out from the rest.

This is fact.It has happened to me more than once.Had a 25lb common pull my rod, pod and 2 alarms in.Dove into 5 ft of water grabed my pod with alarms in one hand off the bottom and grabbed the rod in the other.Climbed back out and landed that fatty. Aired out wallet and alarms and took pictures. No way for time to take your wallet out. Another time I caught a rod in mid- air by the back of the handle left handed, probably my best save ever.

This is for sure, and it doesn't take that big of a carp to send your pole airborn. If you don't have your rod 'n reel anchored down, a 1-pounder can do it.
