Any thing silver from spoons to even a small filet of a ribbon fish. Pat your out there more than I am why not use a treble hook with those quick strikes vs a single? As fast as they hit I have not had any problems with them swallowing the hook, it is usually a clean hook up.

Bingo... maybe a jigging spoon sometimes. Gold works as well. I got on ebay a few years back and bought I think 200 spoon blanks. I built them up with my own hooks and they are super cheap .20$ each I do not feel bad when we lose 20 of them on a charter.

I like single hook silver spoons as well. Matching the hatch even more important. I carry several sizes. Tony Acetta makes Pet Spoons. I like 'em.
Razzorduck Better tighten that drag boy, He's gonna spool ya!

I guess dumb down to my level...why single hook vs treble hook. I only get down there maybe 4 to 5 times a year and want to know why and what works best. While using a single hook what size do y'all use?

the fish have SHARP teeth and the struggle of pulling out all three barbs could get you a nasty cut. YES the hook up ratio can go down with a j hook, but the quality big smacks tend to swallow the baits so youlle save your self time with the dinks. i also use Gotcha plugs, they help me get the lure deeper than a silver spoon. by the looks of it you seem pretty new to smacks so my 2 cent is use black wire and swivel, the shiny silver swivel can atract the smacks to hit it and it will cut your main line. also jerk em quick, the fast movement will atract them more and get you a better hook set. a fun though a little bit less rpoductive way is topwater. its alot of fun the gotcha plug i go for is either red head white body or red head silverbody

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/360854275917?lpid=82This is my favorite for schooling Smacks, use 100lb test mono since cable or wire seems to spook them, replace hooks with a single hook, (this spoon comes with a single) and "burn it" across the surface. Another fun thing is to catch them on a fly rod and a clousure fly. The bigger smacks are usually deeper below the schooling smacks along with Kingfish in the month of July when they are schooling right outside the jetties.

Just cut about 4 inches off a McDonalds straw and put it over a steel leader with a treble. put below popping cork and cast into frenzy,no need to use expensive lures.
If I can get away from the Gulf I have a muley and an elk tag for colorado
