I am sure this topic has been discussed many times on here but heres your chance to go at it again. What is the best cast net on the market today? Betts? I hear thats a good one. So what do yall say? I am looking for a 9' 1 1/2 lb net. Its not for me I am sending it to my son thats stationed in North Carolina and he says they can have any size net they want, no regs on net size.

Try looking at the Baitbuster nets, I don't have one yet but thats what my next net will be for deep water, another good net is the Joyfish, you can Google Lee Fisher Nets and do a comparison with both brands as well as Mako nets, this is a good starting point.

Before you spend the $$$ on a high end net like that, check around that area and see what is commonly used. I say that cause I wound up with an 8 ft bait buster and even if it was legal here I couldn't use it much cause it's so dang heavy!!!

Tom has a good point. I don't like the weight of those big nets either. That being said your son may know what wants.

If it was legal, I would throw a 10 footer. I used to before I realized it was illegal. A 20 ft circle catches a lot of bait!!!

Thanks guys, what he is trying to accomplish is a little lighter weight net. The only net he has is either a 12 or 14' net and I think its 14. I have watched him throw that when we visited him in Florida last year. He had net hanging all off of him and had to do a spin and turn and everything else but that thing opened up and for 45 minutes we dug these little fish out of the net. He tried to tell me it was a bad idea to throw it on them but I wanted to see it work. I will check out some of the nets yall have suggested.

What is he trying to catch with it? In North Carolina it could be a variety of baitfish.....if he's wanting to catch big bunker/menhaden or mullet then something with 3/4 or 1 inch mesh is the ticket...you don't have to have as much weight but you still need a big net. A 1.25 per foot 9ft net with 3/4 inch mesh will sink like a rock.

3/8 - 1/2 in mesh like is so common around here in North Texas has limited uses at the coast and would primarily only be used for light inshore bait like shrimp and mud minnows and small mullet, etc. If that is what he's after then a 7ft net with 1 lb per foot and 1/4 or 3/8 mesh is preferred....most of the time you are throwing in a couple feet of water anyway so a fast sink rate doesn't matter but the smaller mesh will catch more bait of the right size without gilling them.

we have a bait buster that is awesome!! but we still use a net from academy. no reason to rip a nice net around trees and stuff. and we can throw both from the yak!!

I dont know what hes trying to catch other than bait??? The reason he wants a smaller mesh is just what you say to keep from having so much hung in the net.

What's the legal size cast net in Texas I didn't think that it matter to much as long as you only take what you will use.
