How many hours per year old is average?
How many is a lot?
I understand this can be all over the place.....whats your best guess?
Does every fishing trip equal 2-4 hours on the motor? so if they motor has 100 hours is that about 25-40 trips on the lake?

First year- A Bunch. After that about 50-75 for an average user. I launch close to where I fish so I might put 30 minutes a trip. Others run a lot more.

Forty hours is nothing. Don't it take at least 10 hours to break a motor in?
I purchased a 2008 Skeeter bay boat that was a repo. The price was just too good to pass up and it was the layout I wanted. It has a Yamaha 225 on it. Pretty sure it was used as a guide boat as it had 540 hours on the meter when I purchased it.
I had an electrical issue I could not figure out. Took it in and the mechanic pulled the computer data. The hour meter was about 9 hours less than actual reported by the computer; it had 579 by the computer. The mechanic who fixed it looked like he had many years in the motor business. He said he had never seen a Yamaha with that many hours. I asked him if he thought that was a high amount of hours. He really did not give me a good answer either way.
The motor has good compression and runs great. The electrical problem was from a corroded cable (salt water use).
I had a Yamaha 90hp that had to exceed 800 hours. It was running strong when I sold it and if the new owner properly mixes the gas/oil, I bet it's still going.
There are only two types of boat engines: Those that have blown up and those that are going to blow up. Back in my tournament days, I saw engines with less than 100 hours shoot metal through the engine cowling. I saw low hour failure on all brands too (Yamaha, Mariner, Mercs and Johnson). You just never know.
I wonder what would be considered "high hours" on a motor. Anyone?

2,500 is about the limit. 1,000 to 1,500 is not bad if it has been taken care of.

I was a weekend warrior for 4 years, had a place at Fork and spent every fishable weekend we could there. I would put the boat up in winter, too cold for me, so we fished about 8-9 months a year. We fished Fri evenings, all day Sat and Sun til about 3-4 pm. I sold our boat after 4 years with 221 hours on it. That's about 55 hours. Now I'm just thinking out loud (probably wrong)...when I've gone out on guide trips they usually spend about 8-9 hours on the water, lets say we fish a different spot every hour, and travel about 10 minutes from spot to spot..that would be 80 minutes, or hour and 20 minutes. Lets say a guide fishes 240 days, that would put 320 hours a year on his boat...so I guess it depends on the usage, and most importantly the maintenance program..jim

With the newer graphs, a lot of the hours on most boats are not all running hard. Two of the most important things with newer boats is to have them maintained correctly and to regularly run them hard.
I would rather buy a used boat with 300 hours on it that was ran right and maintained then one with 100 hours at 3-4000 rpms and a sketchy maintenance history.

Seems like 30-40 is low to me... Maybe I just run around with tournament guys so my perception is skewed. I would be that I put 125-150 at least. Currently has 440 and it "supposedly" had "about 250" a year ago when I bought it.
Saved by the Lord... glad to be an Aggie!

I purchased a brand new boat in 2005 with a 90 mercury optimax. I always wanted a new one because I felt like I would have atleast a few good years on the water without having to worry about engine problems. WELL- I was all excited, I went to the dealership, hooked up to my new boat and away we went to the lake, me and my dad to start the 20 hour break in process and fish a little. We got out about 3 miles from the boat ramp and the motor just shut down. What The? It wouldn't start again and had to be towed in, in my brand new boat, about an hour on the motor. Took it back to the dealership and a week later they said it was ready to go. Picked it up, went to the lake, and about another hour later it died again. Took it back to the dealership, they did a compression test and said it had a bad cylinder and the top end would have to be rebuilt. I said no way, I ain't having it and they insisted it was all that could be done. Ended up, my dad talked to the president of mercury before I got a new motor and I was having problems with the "computer" in about 3 years. I got away from this motor as soon as I could. I don't know that this a a common problem but it definitely put a bad taste in my mouth for mercury. Oh, and if you're ever gonna purchase a boat in The Woodlands area, don't buy from the dealership with the initials ck. they are some major league ah's. Atleast back then. Sorry for the long read, this post just stirred up some bad memories and I had to vent!

I think about 100 hours a year is a good average for an avid angler. That's what I average.
I fished with a saltwater guide in Louisiana a couple years ago that had twin 4-stroke Yam 225's on his CC bay boat that had 3,500 hours on both motors. He claimed to have never done anything to them other than replace water pump impellers every two years for preventative maint.
It's not uncommon to see 3,000 hours on 4 stroke offshore outboards.
