What am I doing wrong when the fly line piles up about 15 feet in front of me instead of laying out in a straight line?

Sounds like you don't have a good stop on the last forward cast.

What Rex said. I recommend, if you can't find an instructor, to Google up some Lefty Kreh videos. Good data there.

So many things can cause this, video your self casting then compare it to any of the multitude of casting videos on YouTube

Might be casting too early from the back cast? Watch your line to make sure it's unfurling all the way. Otherwise your last forward cast is not being executed properly as the others have said. Google lots of instructional videos and learn to haul/double haul to accelerate your line speed.

As others have said...most likely culprit is not enough acceleration into your back cast, which causes a lot of slack to be created in the forward cast. Accelerate to a good stop on the back cast, pause until you feel the tug, then good acceleration forward to a stop.

Your timing is out and as others have said on your back cast the line must straighten out then on the forward cast accelerate then stop, the line should unfurl and fall straight out in front of you.
After saying all that best rather let a knowledgeable fly caster show you how to do it

Should it unroll perfectly straight, or is a little bunching up normal?

It should lay out pretty straight. All good advice above. Most people starting out don't pause long enough before starting their forward cast. Also, be sure to "aim" your cast about 2ft above where you want the line to land. This mainly keeps you from spooking fish, but it also helps lay the line out straight.

The goal is to get it straight with no slack in the line. Unless of course you are making a slack line cast...

I make that cast at times, intentionally, its called the bucket cast. It can be used to your advantage if you learn to control it. All aforementioned tips are correct especially an instructor and you tube vids.

How old and cheap is your line? Strip it out into a sink of hot water in large loops.

I can make piles with lines from last week and lines from 1967. My conclusion: it ain't the lines.
