Any warranty left on the motor? Do you have a computer read out of the motor history? Get one, look for RPM spikes, engine replacement, total hours and let the technician evaluate the printout. Have all of the modifications and engine updates been applied? Have the mechanic check.
Had three days left on 225 Yam when it blew the power head, Yamaha replaced it, dodged a bullet just because I was lucky....all of this could have been found out if I had the technician analyze the computer printout. totally agree, depends on how it was broke in, how it was taken care of, oil changes ect, have a tech do a read out on it for sure and have the serial number checked, call the boat center in flint, brian can do all of it for sure.

In 2011 I bought mine. I talked to Rick Pierce(owner of BassCat) when I bought mine and at that time there was some chatter about them blowing up. I asked him what he thought. He said 99% of the issues with them were due to owner improper break-in. I broke mine in by the book just like all my others and zero issues.I have owned 3 Yammies and 3 mercs. ZERO trips to the shop for the Yammies, cannot say the same for the black motors. I see alot of different blown motors, nearly all are owner abuse or neglect or cold siezed.

Any motor can and will have issues if not properly maintained, no matter the manufacturer. . When buying used, all you can do is have it checked out by the best mechanic that is available to you. And, if possible, buy one with some warranty.

Mine was manufactured in 2/2010.
I am on my second power head. The first one had almost 300 hours on it when it was replaced. It didn't "blow", but had an issue and Yamaha decided to replace it with a 2013 power head in January 2013 and I've got close to 150 hours on it and have not had any issues.
I did have a couple different issues with the first one unrelated to the issue that caused the replacement. My hours on the first powerhead were 75% 2000 RPMs or less. A lot of graphing .
Yamaha made a lot of changes since the first generation and I haven't heard very many people talking about the problems they were having with the first production of the motor with the newer ones. Well at least not those who actually own a SHO.
Most of the people that talk about the SHO issues are typically those that haven't owned one and most of it is just chatter.
Knowing what I know now I probably wouldn't purchase a 1st generation without some warranty.
Though this is my opinion of any newer production model by any manufacturer.

It has not affected the performance of the motor; I have extended warranty if any issues come up which Yamaha will stand behind.

If I was going to bet, I'd say the one your looking at is OK. I would also bet that a large percentage of guys here and elsewhere who say they have maintained their motor properly have not.

I would not touch it without an extended warranty on it, I know several that have had problems as far as the earlier models. I have not or do not know anyone that has had problems with 2012 or newer.
