I want to try my hand at fly tying...what sort of kit would you recommend? One of the kits fromm bass pro?

I don't know what their kits are like these days. I suggest coming on over to the Cabelas in Allen some Saturday morning and sitting with the tyers. They can sho you the ropes, give you an idea of what ita takes. A few tools and a vise are not a bad way to start.

But if the Bass Pro kit is calling, then go for it, if it's in the cards to tie then either way will get you started.

Amazon has a few for under $100.

My buddy is wanting to get the kit just to get an assortment of feathers, fur, ect.

I'd rather just buy what I need as I go from fly to fly....then one day you end up with it all.

All you need to get started is a vise, thread holder and scissors (whip tool if you like). You can get all that for $30-40 bucks at BPS.

It's usually around 9:00 But call the flyh shop to confirm. Don't take my word before driving over there.

When/if you decide that you are serious about this, don't skimp on the vise or scissors. Everything else, IMO, can be budget. But nor those two pieces of gear.

Flyboy, use You Tube. Any fly you want just type in "fly tying" with it.

Once you start using it you will find your favorite guys to follow.

I would check out Matt Thomas for fast demos, no talk, very short clips. He has a little of everything. From trout to saltwater.

Caddis Fly Shop has some great videos that I find helpful.

I was going to buy a book, but I do better watching and listening. I often times watch a few videos of the same fly pattern to see the "special tips" some of the guys offer along the way. Often times I found watching several I end up doing better.....then I will have a "goto" video to touch base when I need to remember a step.

I also use You Tube for certain skills, for instance "spinning deer hair" or "making your own dubbing" or how to use your hand to whip finish. Ect, ect ect.

I wish I knew how many hours I spent on You Tube the last month.

And between flies search "Fly Fishing Film Tour" to stay pumped up!
