Going to my friends ranch in Groesbeck and apparently it is Sand bass heaven. I have fished for them on a fly rod using clousers but never on a regular rod. Was wondering what to use, I fish for largemouth regularly so I have lots of rattle traps and what not, but I am willing to spend some money. Thanks

Rattle traps will work, I've caught a bunch on them.

Other than that, slabs, spoons, in-line spinners, flukes, crankbaits, swimbaits will all work. Just match whatever they are feeding on. You can probably catch them on just about anything in your bass tackle box. They don't seem to be nearly as picky as those green fish.

Good luck and have fun!

sloveless is probably right but I have always used chartreuse slabs, occasionally white and there is another one that is kind of chrome with shades of silver and blue. I get mine from Walmart for about $1.96 each. Academy has the same color but it has scale looking pattern on the whole slab. I also tie a road runner with small spinner in chartreuse with a bright orange head. Tie them about 12 inch above the slab, usually tie 2 above the slab and lots of multiple hookups when they are active. When you feel the first hookup pause a few seconds before reeling in and a lot of time that will provoke additional hits. I think the slabs weight 7/8 oz so with a couple 1/16 to oz road runners (road runner type jigs) you can chunk it a good way. A lot of times just go straight down and jig off bottom works great.
Good luck on catching.

Fish everytime I can!

Are you fishing the river or the lake? Sand bass are easy to catch but you'll need to be in the strike zone where they can see the bait. Anything shiny, chartreuse or white works when they are on.

Since you are a largemouth fisherman, I'd recommend a crankbait like a rattle trap or square bill if the water is shallow. When the sandbass were spawning last year at PK by the marina, I caught one after another on a bandit 100. Add a couple jigs above the crank bait and catch three at a time. After having to clean a few limits last year I focused on stripers and would just fish for them for fun at the dock before knocking off for the day. When they are really biting it's easy to catch 25 or more an hour. Pretty much catch one every cast.
