The trailer looks like it is bolted together, so lengthening the tongue should be a snap if you have a drill. You should be able to find a frame hitch for about $150, and they are simple enough to bolt on. Christian could certainly show you how to do that.

I had a jon boat on a trailer just like that when I was a teenager, and I towed it all over east Texas for three years with no problem. As long as you keep the load within the range of the tires, you should be fine.

Northern Tool sells a ball mount with a 2" drop, a 2" ball and a receiver pin in a plastic carry case for $15. It's a great deal, and you have a place to keep the mount when you aren't using it.

Or maybe raise the bunk board mounts at the back of the trailer so they sit level.

Great find! I would buy those all day long at that price.

My .02:

I think you may find the tongue length to be acceptable as is - my NC12 fits fine on my trailer and I think it may be shorter than yours. I can open my tailgate without hitting the front post. However, the short tongue does make for some interesting backing.....and with the camper shell, I can't see the boat until it gets out of whack. However, it keeps the total length of everything down. I may still extend mine for ease of backing reasons.

I agree with taller tires. However, if you go with anything beyond 12" dia rims, you are probably going to have to change out to a wider axle as many of these small tire trailers will have interference with a wider/bigger dia rim (anything 13" and above).....the inside of the rim/tire will likely hit the frame - but replacing the 8" with 12" should be no problem. Likewise, those fenders are already very close to the current tires so you will have to raise the fenders even if you go with 12's. No biggie if bolted on - you can fab some extensions. It will be a little more involved if they are welded - that would be the time to buy some beverages and go see Christian to cut them and raise them. If you go 13" or above on the wheels/tires, you may actually need a wider and larger dia fender. Your best compromise may be 12's and then use one of the 8's as a backup spare.

What kind of truck comes without a receiver hitch? wink Def get a rcvr hitch.

These small boat trailers are usually rated for about 1500lbs so it's prob going to ride a bit rough. Removing a leaf spring can improve the ride dramatically when hauling something as light as a yak.

Again, great find - you did well.

Exactly what I need! I've been thinking about putting a reciever on the Fusion and buying a small trailer like this so that when im ready to buy a new yak I wont have to be restricted to finding ones that can be car topped. I really want a pedal drive system kayak and car topping those is usually a big no no because they are so heavy.

If you add on to the tongue you can put the drop in it. That way you will not need to buy a hitch. Good deal on the trailer by the way.

Dont't go spend $200 on a hitch - I have put hitches on two separate vehicles using receiver hitches from an auto salvage yard. Cost me $50 each. Both were bolt on. Will definitely help you with the leveling/tongue length issue.

There's a lot of good info here, and its going to require me going back through and re-reading everything to get my head around it.

I think my plan is...

Hitch from a junk yard (good idea).
Larger wheels from a junk yard..VW Bug. (good idea Christian)

Then come the modifications...
Bunk Bed style double rack for 2 yaks.
Tool box on the front
Possibly installing a car top carrier down low between the bunk boards.
Power supply built in.
Plastic, tube style rod holders

Here is one storage Idea that I really liked. Mine would have to sit front/back instead of right/left.

Be careful on picking up just any wheels. Chances are your bolt pattern is 5 lug 4.5" bolt circle which is pretty standard for trailers. A VW wheel has a different bolt pattern and will not work if that is the case. And again, the offset of the wheel and width will determine if it fits.......so 1) measure your bolt circle to verify what it is (google how to do this) and 2) understand what the bolt circle is for the wheels you are interested in and 3) do a test fit before you commit $.

Christian had mentioned that there are bolt pattern templates at Autozone that you can buy, then figure out which one you have. Take that to the junk yard to make sure they match.
