Went to bass pro and the fly shop guy set me up with a 5 weight White River Dogwood Canyon combo 8' 6" with a case, tippit and four fly's for $150. I am excited and ready to get to casting and learning. I was in Athens, TX a few weekends ago and had a fella named Mr. Capello who is a master fly fishing instructor kinda help me with some basics. Looking forward to try and target some bedding bream/white perch!

The most economical place to purchase flies is www.theflystop.com get some size 16 olive bead head scuds for bluegills and other species. Get some dark colored clousers for bass and chartreuse and white clousers for sand bass.

thanks chatterbait, I saved it in my favorites. Can't wait to go...it's rainy around here today so I will have to wait. Also looking forward to trying from my kayak and learn how to do that.

Congratulations on your new found Hobby/sport. Stick with it and you will have lots of fun.

I only fly fish and lately only with Ultra Light 2 and 3 weights, I also do most of my fly fishing from a kayak, my favorite time of the year is spring and going for the "brim" on the beds.

I have never fished Lake Ray Hubbard. I fish small lakes.

late May, June the bream will be bedding pretty good, I use a small popper mostly as a strike indicator (although I often catch fish on it too), with a 2-3 foot dropper underneath usually a scud/woolly booger/doesn't matter a whole lot they ain't picky, anyway rigged like that my son & I wear out the bream (and I love catching them big red-breasted sunfish) give it a try

I hear Lake Welsh is a good lake for that. We could use castnets to catch the bream and then use them to catch the largemouth.

Largemouth taste way better than sandbass. We could get a bunch of guys that like to fish the creeks and have a big ole largemouth fish fry at Dangerfield State Park (its only four miles from Mike's place). Whata say Mike? 20 guys, that would be 100 fish and that would be the legal way. 100 LM's. GONE...We could even use near deeres. Oh boy !!!!!

c'mon over , if it takes 20 of y'all to catch 100 Welsh bass then you y'all need to practice quit a bit wink btw, I wouldnt eat the fish from Welsh, they lifted the consumption ban a few years ago, but I'm still leary

Well I went and tried it out for the first time! My seven year old and I hit a city park pond she was working the ultralights and I was working the fly rod...I lost a fly right at the bank got hung on some water grass and somehow my line came off the fly and when that happens you will never find it I looked for that booger for ten minutes. I couldn't resist trying out the dry fly cricket...man that was fun to work and the anticipation of a possible strike kept my adrenaline flowin a bit. My seven year old kept buggin me about wanting try the fly rod and I helped her doing it together and then turned her loose after a while and wow! she did great, after she got the feeling for keepin the wrist straight.

Limit of 5 bass per person genius...20 x 5 = 100
They still teach math in Kentucky, right. It surely not about character.

Congrats on the new rod. Unfortunately, decorating the trees and grass with colorful flies is just part of fly fishing. We've all done it.

And I agree, the suspense of topwater fishing is part of the fun.

Stick with it but be careful next thing you know you will have a vice tying something that resembles some strange bug you saw by the water lol. It is a blast once you get into it. Like chatterbait said chartreuse and white clousers are the only fly for sandbass. Gills will hit gust about any small trout nymph or small bugger. Tell you the truth gills will put anything they can fit in there mouth that looks like dinner. Have fun!
