Many times I find that I have to backup pretty much blind -- boat fills interior mirror and tow mirrors don't help when trying to hit a ramp that goes off at an angle. Have been considering mounting a backup camera on the boat trailer.

Thoughts?

One, you will need one that is submersible. the only time I have a problem is on a ramp that drops off sharply

You can create a portable PVC mount (fits in the rod holders) to mount a backup camera.
A few months ago, I purchased a back-up camera off e-bay ($50), and mounted it to PVC.
One top, Horizontal 5" to 7" length, and 90 degree elbows on either side, and
two vertical lengths that mount in the other sides of the elbows. Screws mount
into the 90 degree elbows, for the backup camera. I ran the wires for the camera
down the length of one vertical tube. This all fits in my rod
holder (front of my motor well), and I have a cigarette lighter
plug for the camera, and this plugs into a cigarette lighter type
plug in my Outboards motor well (runs to my main starting battery, and normally
used to power my sunshine baittank), so the camera is higher than the outboard.

I have 2 backup cameras (one on the license plate holder VR2) and the other in the boat that I have plugged in while driving down the road (you can see both sides of the boat while changing lanes, while backing down the ramp, and while backing the boat trailer into my boat storage unit I have a large yellow plug hanging from a cross member, and I know I have backed far enough into the boat stall, when the plug touches the outboard.

I actually have mistakenly left it plugged in right now (forgot to unplug it the last time I was out on the boat -3 weeks ago), but they don't use a lot of power, and the battery is hooked up to the battery charger.

I unplug camera, and remove this upside down "U", and place it in the cuddy, while running the boat (use those rod holders for rods).

I think it would be cheaper and easier and well worth your time to spend a little time practicing with a trailer than to try to put a backup cam on the back of your trailer.

a wireless will work, attach it to the boat motor with some velcro and run a plug in power source to it to replace the reverse light connection, that way when your through using it , it can be remooved

This is the truth. I've yet to fish with anyone other than Tony who can back my truck down a ramp because it's lifted and they can't use mirrors. Between the height and the toolbox you aren't seeing anything out the back window.

Spend 1/2 an hour learning to use the mirrors as they were intended and you'll never need a camera. Idiot proof way, put your hand at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel and steer towards the problem aka if it is drifting too far right in that mirror, turn the wheel right and vice versa.

I agree learn to use the mirrors. I back 53' trailers and boat trailers with the mirrors. A camera would confuse me.

We have a backup cam in our newish suv. When I drive I put a cap or something over it, I find If I look at it I only pay attention only to what is behind me and nothing else.

I was taught to use mirrors when backing, put your hand at the bottom of the wheel and move your hand the way you want the trailer to go. Move slow and you will never have a problem.
