That's the reason for the decline of native species, and the emergence of the fresh water reds.

They tried all kinds of exotic species, and some where even Tarpon and Nile perch, and Orange Mouth Corvina, which they mysteriously stopped stocking after only a few short years, and they grew fast and became popular amoung anglers.

So the ground work had been laid for a monster to lurk the dark waters below, and next time you get your reel stripped, you can thank those early visionaries who so stocked our beloved Calaveras and Braunig lakes so many years ago.

I've heard several similar stories about Calaveras and Braunig both, and people think I'm crazy when I tell them that they stocked Tarpon in those lakes at one time and it wouldn't surprise me if they could be the culprit in these stories.

I'm glad someone else knows about this.

I tried to hook him today on my 10 weight and a magnum Cypert Minnow but didn't have a drift sock and the wind moved me along too fast in my Kayak to get down deep enough with a 16 foot leader. Waiting for a calm day.

I am the same way, I enjoy listening to the old timers. It's amazing how much you can learn from them if you just listen.

I seen that happen twice in one night at the point next to the pier at Braunig. One guy fighing next to the trees, using a surf rod Penn 309 with 20# or 30# mono. The guy was over talking to me when his rod doubled over, the line snapped before he got to the rod. The same thing happened to the guy fishing toward the pier about 2hrs later, same type of setup. Both fisherman had thier drags really tight, using heavy line. I have seen rods bend with a 20lb plus red or cat but both were literally doubled over on the cusp of breaking, and I witnessed both.

Anybody got evidence of tarpon or nile perch stocking? Lake records don't show them.

The lake records do show them. 1978 and 1979 for Nile perch and 1984 and 1985 for tarpon, but they are Braunig not Calaveras. People have the lakes confused.

This is true! They did officially only stock Braunig with those species, and I reiterate officially.
Back then it seemed they had some mad scientist working at TPWD with all these wild ideas, so I've always had my conspiracy theories.....They do pump water from Braunig into Calaveras to bring up it's level from time to time, so how many fish get pumped in from Braunig as well?....Who knows? Also with the lakes being so close together, one has to wonder if some of those fish didn't make it into Calaveras....Un-officially?????? noidea

Going back and looking at the stocking history you can see they've slighted the LMB and have concentrated primarily on stocking the redfish, which I guess to most that is the most popular species.
2008 was the last stocking of LMB @ 11,000
The Hybrids fall just behind the reds in popularity and stocking of 44,309 in 2013.
The most popular and most stocked yearly are the redfish @314,257 in 2013.
So pretty much Braunig and Calaveras are put in take lakes.
If you are a die hard Bass fisherman you have you're work cut out for you if you want to bass fish on either lake.
Long gone are the good ole days of 10lb. plus LMB, and when 5 to 8lb. bass were common, and then there were the weekly bass tournaments!...Excuse me, I think my allergies are acting up again, or I've got something in my eye!

My bet is on a red.

Most make a couple runs, but I have hooked a few that pull all their umph into the first run, gets you thinking you have a monster on and at the end of the first run you real in dead 35 inch red that gave every last bit of fight he had on the first run.

I wish they'd bring back the mad scientist to TPWD. I would love to see more variety again. I'd be happy with the return of the corvina even though I know it'll never happen.

I think those Corvina scared the carp out of TPW because they abruptly stopped the stocking and they were highly popular out there. They were growing so fast from year to year it was unreal, and the fight they put up would rival the reds pound for pound for pound they would win.
I talked to a biologist out there at the ramp shortly after they stopped stocking them and I asked him why? His reply was, "They (TPWD) feared that they would get through the gates and into the San Antonio river and make it down to the coast and breed with the native speckled trout hybridize the species so someone pulled the alarm, so they stopped it."
They were some fighters for sure and pretty easy to catch using conventional bass tackle and lures.
