April issue, "If There Was Just 1"

I say this article is totally worthless, that the rule guarantees a bogus result. The rule is that no pro fisherman can select as his "1" any lure already chosen by another pro. Ask 100 pros and you guarantee 100 different answers.

I say the right, and only, rule is to ask is, if you had to choose only one lure to fish with, what would it be? That any other pro, or even every other pro, would make the same choice is irrelevant. Ask 100 pros and you may get 100 different answers, but more likely you'll get relatively few different answers as several or many of the pros would choose the same lure. Only then would you have an article that was of some value to the readers.

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

For sure. I almost don't even read most articles by individual pro anglers about fishing. All you get is a commercial for their sponsors. Meaningless information most of the time. If you ask an angler to choose 1 lure but they end up with their #6 because their others were already taken that's just ridiculous.

Good point you have there. What's the point of the article if they're going to name every lure on the market? How does that help us (the readers)??

I never really put much thought into those "what if you only had" pieces. If I only had a hammer, doesn't mean I can build a house...

I bailed on renewing my subscription because I found little information that was actually "new" information. This article is just an example of them trying to trick it up and make it look new.

They're trying to get the pros to "think outside the box". We all (85%) would probably choose the same lure, but by making them choose something different maybe we would learn something if forced to choose something different and try to develop another pattern... Dan

I don't know but maybe a better question would be, "What's the number one lure you'd use that you don't pimp for?"
