Well...my sweet little barn cats did it to me again! This jewel was waiting for me at my door step this weekend. What do ya think?

I know what you mean. Now imagine stepping outside first thing in the morning to go get the paper with this thing laying there!
These cats are great. We had 3 of them but one disappeared a month or so ago. I guess coyotes got'em.
They are great hunters!

I'm not very familiar with all the different kinds of snakes in Tx. so could be way off base here, but looking at the picture and comparing it to the following website photo, it looks to me like it was probably a gopher snake. http://www.zo.utexas.edu/research/txherps/snakes/pituophis.catenifer.html Either that or it is another copper-moccasinned-king-coral-water-rattler. Seems to be a lot of them down here.

The Gopher Snake looks like a pretty good guess from the pictures. I looked through some other pictures and was not able to find another that looked closer. The tough thing is that this looks like a young snake and a young one will not have as clear of a scale pattern as an adult, but still similar though. Anyway, it does look similar to a Gopher Snake's pattern, I can't offer another that looks closer.

I think its one of those harmless water snakes that looks like a moccasin---note long skinny tail.

Yep...that is a Prairie King Snake. Very gentle and pretty harmless. They come in a variety of colors to match it's surroundings.

Here is a picture of the Gopher Snake: http://www.enature.com/fieldguide/showSp...p;recnum=AR0112 Then here is a picture of the Prairie King Snake: http://www.enature.com/fieldguide/showSp...p;recnum=AR0624 It's still tough to tell, but Duck may be right about it beng a type of king snake, I'm not sure. Nevertheless, it's a harmless non-poisonous snake that fell victim to the cat's need to hunt.
