When you change line do you use a lot of backing on your reel and just put on a section of your main line that is a little longer than you plan to cast or do you use just a few yards of backing and a many yards of your main line?

When it comes to backing the only time that I really use it is for braid, and for situations where the spool on the reel holds more than 130 yards of line. I like to have enough of the main line on my reels such that when I make a cast there is enough of the main line to totally cover the knot to any backing. I HATE having knots traveling through my guides. TFP

I do about 1/4 give or take mono backing then the rest flouro. This way I get two reels spooled and have leader line left over from a 200 yard spool of invizx. I like the knot deep in the spool personally and don't want it going through my guides.

Big spool reels like the 5500 C3 which I use will have 1/3 backing and 2/3 new line.
Like said above unless you have the big spool reels just do it with braid. Some of those reels only hold a 100 yds. of mid range pound test.

I'm wondering the same thing. I need one of those line counter/measuring tools. I can tie a tinny knot, and they still cause a bulge in one spot. That bulge makes me crazy. I do hate wasting line though.

since I use primarily big game mono I don't use backing, I have been spooled a couple of times by big fish and do not want a knot in the equation.

1/4 spool of old line gets me 2 rods for one 200 yard new spool. Plus some leader like Ban-D I use double-Uni just like my leader

why would you put "BACKING" on your reel to begin with ? why have 2 different kinds of line and a knot in your line ? what's the purpose ?

why would you put "BACKING" on your reel to begin with ? why have 2 different kinds of line and a knot in your line ? what's the purpose ? Because I use fluorocarbon on most of my reels and I don't want to fill an entire spool. The reel doesn't cast as well way down on the spool. I'm with Trickster. 40 backing and 60 main line. I get a lot more fill ups that way. Saves money and keeps fresh line on the reel. I use up my old mono for backing.

not all of us have money to burn, just another way to save some money. Working man blues ya know? I guess that is a very valid reason& the one that most people use......but C'mon Man..... Look in your tackle box, how many unused lures do you have in there, heck look in those "extra" tackle boxes that you do not use anymore and all those lures laying around........and you are going to save a few pennies with backing and a knot ? don't et me wrong,,,,I am nor arguing the point of using backing,,, I am just asking is that the best place to keep the cost of your fishing down? I would just bet that you (that means most fishermen) are putting backing line on a real expensive ($100+) reel. I just don't understand "backing" a reel with cheaper line. I would look to save $$$$ elsewhere, if that is the issue. Now, that is just my perspective ....... not an argument or condemnation of those that do back with a different line. God forbid, but what happens if you get a bird's nest and have to cut some of that line out & now the knot gets in the way and you are actually fishing with 2 different types of line ? Is there a reel (play on words) fishing advantage to backing ?

why would you put "BACKING" on your reel to begin with ? why have 2 different kinds of line and a knot in your line ? what's the purpose ? When the line you're buying costs upwards of 25 bucks for 200 yards, you want to get the most use out of it and waste as little as possible. I use Braid backing to fluorocarbon. Much smaller connecting knot, doesn't make as big of a "lump" in the spool.

try this......when you need to respool....tie one line that's already on a reel...lighten the drag on that reel...then start to reel the "new" reel...the line at the top of the spool is now on the bottom of the new reel...the unused line on the 1st reel is now "new" line on the 2nd reel.....it'll save tons of money...did that make sense....just flip flop the lines...to make it a shorter answer...
