Call David at shut-up-and-fish, he can help you with both units. I'd sure take a long hard look at the Garmin!

Ring fry did you get the si box as well for the garmin? How easy is the unit to use? And what unit did you mount for up front?

I cant speak about use of the Garmin, but can for the Humminbird units. You will not be disappointed if you go the Humminbird route, the ease of use, mapping options, if you run a Navionics chip you can participate in the Sonar Charts feature as well. I run 3-1199s in this boat, and had 2-1198 and a 998 in my last, the 999 is a great unit.

Daniel,
The first pic was taken with the DownVu and left side of SideVu with the GCV10 box. These were taken by a buddy of mine a few weeks ago. I am running only the 301DV on the trolling motor. I will see if I can get him to post more pics and tell you how easy it is to use.

Buddy said he would get back with you when he gets home from fishing.

I was in the same situation and decided to go lowrance Lss2 combo simply because they're offering a $300 rebate. just picked up an hds7 lss2 combo for $830 and may buy the 8 too.(after rebates). Not to add to the mix but just figured I'd let you know if you weren't aware of the rebates.

One big plus of Humminbird is choice in Mapping LakeMaster and Navionics. Look at coverage where you are with other brand.

The plus to me is Garmin does their own mapping. You don't have to rely on another company. And Garmin's mapping is the most up to date mapping out there. Plus the chirp sonar is the best sonar, not even a comparison. But the basic sonar that comes standard on the Garmin's is better than the Birds sonar. I'm not sure where grout-scout gets that they cant compete.

Humminbird is extremely easy to use and allows the user quick fingertip control. It offers 3 presets available for you to choose the screens you use the most. It uses an external antenna so that you get the best satellite communication possible and allows numerous mounting options, many units can be linked together with an Ethernet cable to allow sharing of information from one unit to another. You do not need to buy additional parts in order to have downscan and sidescan in units like the 1199.

Garmin requires the GCV in order to have downscan and sidescan capabilities even in their top of the line GPSMAP 1040xs. It uses an internal antenna, but you can buy an external. It does not have customizable monitor presets.

More expensive, smaller screen, no side/down imaging standard. Humminbird for sure.
