OK !! I have bought just about every color of the Bobby Garland bodies and Thump Buddies. Any others I have missed ?? It seems like I have enough crappie bodies to open my own bait store !! Now I need to find out what size jig heads to buy. Do I get the plain head or the ones with a collar and spike? What about color? Any ideas on the best color to use? By the time I get through with all this tackle, I will need to get a new boat just to carry it all. That will be the next subject. I really appreaciate all your feedback as it helps an old man be prepared. Randy in Alabama

Hell, just buy some of each. I use the Chartreuse, pink, and black. I also have some of the plain (unpainted) one in 1/16 and 1/8 oz. A lot of the guys use a lot smaller heads, 1/32 and 1/64 oz.

Some of every size minnow head, bullet head, ball head, and walleye heads. Mostly 1/16 and 1/8 unpainted jigs (non-collared) with number 2 and number 4 hooks (sickle and round bend). If you were to add some Thermocline Lures Lil Fry's to your jig body collection, I would suggest adding 1/32 and 1/64 unpainted minnow heads and bullet heads (non-collared).
Pink jig heads work well in cold water, unpainted work well the rest of the time.

GEE!! I don't think my boat would float with that much lead in it. Could you narrow it down just a bit ? What I want is enough different sizes and colors to cover MOST conditions.

The main colors your going to need are chartreuse pink and orange. I was the same way when i started fishing for crappie a couple of months ago. Get some sickle hook jigs with no collar you will love them and they wont tear up your plastics either i use 1/16 and I fish them in tandem. I really like using chartreuse and pink as jig heads.

I think what you're going to hear is that having jigheads in sizes from 1/64 oz. up through 1/8 oz., and in various colors like black, white, yellow, pink, and unpainted should do you. I bought a cheap little aluminum case for trout flys that I organize my jigheads in by size and color- makes it easy. Don't forget the balsa wood slip bobbers.

GEE!! I don't think my boat would float with that much lead in it. Could you narrow it down just a bit ? What I want is enough different sizes and colors to cover MOST conditions. Sure...a bunch of 1/16, some of each in 1/64, 1/32, and 1/8 of each type minnow, and ball (in that order of purchase. A few 1/16 and 1/8 ball heads (non collared) in pink...everything else unpainted lead head. this collection will cover 97% of fishing conditions....On the color spectrum unpainted lead is the easiest color for crappie to see. Hope this helps. In 3ft or less, I use 1/64th; 3 to 8ft - 1/32; 8 to 15ft - 1/16th; over 15ft - 1/8th...this is my general rule of thumb...good luck and good fishing. Keep in mind you are just getting started in the tackle dept...Incidentally, since you have thump buddies, ask Lane to make you some of his Flour Pink heads...in the cold weather they are the bomb!

My name is Okie Bob and I'm a tackle 'ho' and jig head colors are for selling jig heads not catching crappie! Don't believe me, check with Chuck Rowlins at bigcrappie.com. Look at the pics on his website. He's caught as many crappie as all the rest of us combined and he uses strictly unpainted jig heads in 1/16 and 1/8 oz exclusively. I don't think I'd be exaggerating to say he and his customers have caught over !00,000 crappie? And when Jigum comes fishing in my boat, he brings his dock shooter and a jigging pole with a very small plastic package with a handful of jigs he ties. We do pretty good with just that amount of tackle!

[quote=Ketchn]Slab Bandits as well Thermocline baits as well Bonehead baits as well quote] Look at these too. Custom baits that are not off the shelf and they work too!!!! Robert (Crazy Angler), tboxfish, and Josh are all great people to do business with.
