Hi all, I don't know much about kayaking but I would like to get one for my son soon. He has a 2003 Ford Escort which is a small 2 door car with a sloping roof. He is looking at a 12 ft Pescadoro kayak. I am not sure that roof can handle the weight of the kayak and a support cushion underneath. Because the roof slopes a little, not sure if a rack will work either. Need the advice of you guys on this situation and what you think would work best.
Thanks in advance!

Not a fan of the "foam on roof" carriers but the pescador is one of the lighter yaks (60ish lbs) and probably wouldn't have a problem using stern and bow lines. However, to take any concerns out of the equation, you probably want to consider a rack system such as Yakima or Thule and yak carriers on the rack. The components aren't cheap new and you can easily spend as much on the rack and carriers as the yak. If you google 2003 ford focus rack carrier kayak, you can find options and examples. Here is one such site: http://www.rackattack.com/car-rack-installations/ford/ford-focus-rack-systems.aspOnce you know what you might want, you can often find the pieces such as the bars and the yak carriers used on CL or yak sites such as the TFF classifieds. The "bases" or "feet" for the rack are usually auto-specific and harder to find so if you go this route, you may have to buy new. A good secure carrier system is critical not only to protect your vehicle but also others on the road.

Pete! I have a Chevrolet Impala which is a fairly larger car, but I purchased Sherpak Smart Bars for a hundred bucks and put them on and take them off every time I take my kayak out. They are steel bars with a type of clip that slides on the bar to form fit any size vehicle that has pads that go into the clips to elevate and protect the car. They work great! It has straps that run through the inside of the car to attach them to the roof. Check them out! They are much much cheaper then Thules, etc and have given me 0 problems.
I also used just the foam blocks for several months, and though it worked...it's incredibly nerve wrecking to drive with.
Good luck on the purchases!
