This little fella just took up residence this weekend in my tree. It was formerly occupied by a horned owl much larger than this guy, but he left last fall and we haven't seen him since. This tree has had an occupier every year for sometime now. Guess I need to meet & greet him - when he wakes up.

I was about 30 feet away. Thought he was sleeping until I read a bit about the Eastern Screech Owl last night in a bird book. Apparently they like to perch at the opening of their dwelling, and when they feel threatened( like when an 8 yr old girl yells "daddy daddy daddy - look it's an owl" ), they will perk up their ears, flatten their chest, and close their eyes in an attempt to blend into their surroundings. These little guys are only 8"-10" tall too.

Cool pick, TM! I wish I had some big, ol' mature trees where critters could set up residence like that!
