So, I have a couple customers between Lake Charles, LA and Beaumont, TX, which means I am going to use them as an excuse to put my new Kayak in the truck and go bay/marsh fishing! I LOVE redfish and speckleds. But the only time I have done it was on vacation in FL with a "guide". Can anyone just give me a pointer as to where to put in to get some fishing in? Thank you in advance.

The wife and I are headed to that area Monday morning to try our luck. I should have some info coming in this evening and tomorrow morning from my bro-n-law and friend who live there. I'll post up what I get. Until then maybe there's other on here with some pointers

One is telling me Sabine lake fishing north of what he is calling the "thousand yard cut". The other is telling me the marshes of Keith Lake and to watch for gators... So I guess I'll see if google earth will show some put in spots for Keith Lake...

I grew up in Port Arthur. There will be gators in just about any water you try. Another place you might try is Bessie Heights. If you drive west out of Bridge City on FM 1442 (Roundbunch Rd) about 5 miles, you will come to Bessie Heights Rd. Turn left and go to the end. There is a ramp there, and you can cover quite a bit of the marsh from that corner. I've caught redfish, spotted seatrout, flounder, bass, crappie and catfish all within an easy paddle from the ramp in the same day. We've also caught Spanish mackerel at times, but you will have to have good braid or a wire leader to land them.

BKT, how was the fishing, any report on what you found and if you would recommend it?

We didn't go to Keith Lake much because the shell was so hard on the boats. But kayaking would be different. I know guys that practically lived out there. But, it is pretty much a wide open dish pan. If the wind is blowing much, you won't have much cover unless you head to the south shore line and hug the shore.

Good luck. The fishing there can be spectacular for specks and reds.

The wind has been pretty tough here the few days and I'm hoping that it'll die down soon. Is the bottom of Keith soft enough for a PVC stake out pole?

Absolutely. That's what we always used in our boat (30+ years ago!) There's a lot of shell, and if you get in very shallow water where you are dragging the bottom, it will take it's toll.
