i saw what i thought was a mountain lion today at alan henry. he looked to be pretty young, maybe 2 years max. i have seen several bobcats in my life and i dont think this was one. we tried to snap a picture but he was not interested in hanging around the area after he saw us.

No, I don't, the photo was taken by a grad student in Wildlife and Fisheries at Texas A&M who was working in ornithology. But it sure was an eyeopener about how stealthy they could be.

a mountain lion is remarkably different from a bobcat. if you saw something similar to a mountain lion, well, it was probably a mountain lion. there are no other similar-looking felidae (members of cat/carnivore family) that are native to texas. here's a great research site for native texas animals: http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/search.htm

I was on a lease in Jacksboro several years ago that supposedly had a couple. The landowner sorta showed me one through a spotting scope one day...it was so far away I couldn't distinguish between a mountain lion or a giant bobcat. Cool to watch, either way...

saw one about 15 years ago in Katy in what is now Cinco ranch golf course. Used to be a ton of goose fields out there too. Its sad that alot of habitat is destroyed and turned into pesticide laden golf course. Of course those golf course ponds sometimes contain some nice bass!~

About 10 years ago I was bow hunting out toward Spicewood. I was down in the bottoms in my ground stand, and unusually hadnt seen any deer. I was about to pack up when on the hill in front of my I saw what I thought was a deer. The same color but it moved real smooth and quick not like a deer. I then noticed how it was lower to the ground and much longer that a deer. Then all of a sudden a light bulb went off in my head and I decided it was time to go. I got out my flashlight and shined it on the cat. Its eyes reflected red in the light. I hurried to the car, and turned to shine the light again and found that the cat had closed the distance between us by half. It was probably 80-100 yards away when I first saw it, and was now about 40 yards away. I was sure glad I was at the car and never hunted out there without a sidearm again. JR

Years ago when I was young and hunting with my father he shot a doe and then came to pick me up because it was getting dark. When we got back the doe had been dragged off and we found her with her neck all slimy and gooey. Dad grabbed a hoof and started to drag and we heard the cat scream, think we were all as white as a ghost at that point. The cat had to be no more than 15 yards away behind a little thick brush line. All the flashlights were pointed that way and we watched the eyes move very quickly from side to side. Much to my dismay dad insisted on taking his doe out and lucky for us the cat let us be.

Several years ago I shot a coyote, not a great shot but it I took it. The coyote ran off and I knew about where it should be.
Went into the bottom to get it and and I heard the most awful scream that you want to hear. Heard it twice. Not enought gun, time to leave the bottom.
To cut the story down, I called TPWD about a couple of things. Again to cut the story down, the biologiet said a mountain lion had moved in into our bottom, Leon County. The biologist said there are mountain liones in 252 of the 254 counites in Texas.
A short time later it moved next door to my mother's house. It screamed close to the house while she was in the garage washing clothes. Time to close the door.
About two (2) weeks later we saw one run across Hwy 75 south of Buffalo.
There are here, but in live in 100 square mile area according to the bioligist.
I know a neighbor who made frieneds with the helicopter pilots with a seismicgraphic crew in Leon County who said they save seen numerous ones while flying in the explosivbes the to the crews.

Driving from my mother's farm, on a back road in Southeast Kansas, one crossed the road in front of my car. A ranch West of the farm was losing calfs to mt. lions. They installed speakers around their pasture that gave off a shotgun sound to frighten them off. The speakers where set off by a timing device.
